Default new graphic novel reader & interested in watchmen

I've recently been looking into reading graphic novels, and many folks say the watchmen is a great place to start.

I'm curious just where to start reading the series as it's a bit old. I'm sure there is an order to read them in chronologically or something.

I'd prefer to get them in a hardcover format if possible, I've got plenty of nice shelf space.

So, lemme know please, and thanks in advance.

Watchmen is a self-contained story. Read the hardcover (if that's your preference over the paperback), and that's it.

If you truly enjoy it, I'd recommend reading the Before Watchmen prequels of the characters you're most interested in. I believe those issues will be collected into hardcovers (maybe just paperbacks) in April or May.
Avengers, Daredevil, Fantastic Four, FF, Hawkeye, New Avengers
Animal Man, Batman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Justice League
    Saga, Thief of Thieves.

The Before Watchmen books are coming in August or September, can't remember which, in Deluxe format only as for the moment.

Watchmen is pretty much only available in collected edition, you'd really have to try to get single issues. Very accessible

Sandman by Neil Gaiman. It is ten trades long but you can get hardcovers that are larger, consisting of multiple trades. The ten trades, while full of various stories, arcs, and characters, do make one linear long history that has a beginning and an end. For many people that like it, Sandman is the most amazing comic book writing ever published. The only things as good are more serious works like Maus. I go back and read the books periodically and am always blown away by it. My one great comic book hope is that someday I will read something else that even approaches it's compexity and beauty.
