I used to edit tvtropes too but after a while I've started noticing the bad parts of it like the moderation, the community, the tvtropes' definition of "trope" vs. the definition of the literary term, and the site's aversion of criticism to fictional works and to itself. When I realized that, I just stopped editing the wiki.

Massive often entertaining time suck. But it has to be taken with a grain of salt, considering how many of the categories are subjective.

Very interested in looking at it.

However, it's fueled in speculation about how things work the way they do in fiction. It can also be subject to presenting opinion as fact.

I think it's nice that the site treats the old storytelling devices and patterns as something positive rather than as marks of unoriginality like some would. In my experience, the stuff they catalog kind of falls into a middle ground, though. Not mythic enough to be archetype. Not tired enough to be cliche.

Amusing, and I remain an occasional contributor, but the occasional micromanaging and moral panic attacks has hurt matters at times.

Addicting as hell. And a great fun site. No, it doesn't need to be used as an authority on creative works, but it puts certain ideas seen in various mediums in perspective and a language to articulate them.

Been to the site twice, did not interest me one bit.

We struggled against apartheid in South Africa, supported by people the world over, because black people were being blamed and made to suffer for something we could do nothing about; our very skins. It is the same with sexual orientation. It is a given.

It's a fun site to browse for a while when you're bored...

'Mm,' she agreed. 'He's a little bit dodgy in the same way that rats are a little bit covered in fur."

I don't have that problem anymore since I discovered that every single Peanuts strip ever made is online.
