It can be mildly useful as a storehouse for out-of-context spoiler-y anecdotes, but I can't get behind anything that adds more unnecessary jargon to the worlds of genre fandom.

A lot of the people there are plain ignorant or just misinformed of basic literary terms. The biggest is probably the inability to tell the difference between subversion and deconstruction.

Yes, and very addictive if you start clicking the links to other tropes.

    Entertaining enough.
But like 'Mythbusters', its fans need to back away from their self-appointed sense of authority.

A repost of what I said the last time someone started a thread here about TvTropes:

TV Tropes is awful. Not everything needs to be categorized and given a cute nickname.

This. A number of years ago now I was quite involved, but the community pushed me away. I still enjoy reading it as a time waster, but if you talked to some of the "big names"*, you'd think they were writing the Third bloody Testament.

Oh, and the hideous trend toward making everything sound the same. Which eejit thought having 5 tropes with virtually identical names was an IMPROVEMENT?

    * I use this term VERY loosely

I'm guessing the potential for being confusing and alienating to newcomers (Goddamn n00bs!!!1!1!) is what makes it so.

I enjoy it when I'm on it. Usually I have to be linked to it when I'm on it, besides that I never go on it on my own accord. I find it highly amusing. The thing is, though, I never realize just how hooked I get until I realize just how much time I spent going through the tropes. If I'm late for something, I have to completely avoid the site.

I liked it a lot at first and i was addicted to reading all about the tropes but it can make you awfully cynical about things if you don't take it for a grain of salt.

I've never visited the community forum.
