Each background color/hue/pattern/texture matches up with an image/reality. Each of the sections with the stark white background represent the 616 reality.

I thought you were referring to his head and I was like that's obviously some alternate universe.

That new arc sounds pretty fun. This is my first time reading a YA run, and I've been surprised at how good it's been, so far.
