The first trade is one of my favourite Ultimate books. Story wise, it's nothing new. But it's written wonderfully and it all feels epically exciting throughout. It feels like a much better version of Lost In Space, like a proper hard Sci-Fi and it would make an excellent movie or short animated film some day.
2000-2006: Golden Age of the UU
2007-2009: Age of Loebotomy
2009-2011: Post-Ultimatum Era
2011-????: Silver Age of the UU
Agreed. The first trade is one of the best you'll find in the Ultimate Universe. The next couple of arcs are good, but they soon start going downhill.
The Fantastic, Doom, and the Mark Millar arcs, I stopped reading when he left.
Pretty much all the stuff Mark Millar wrote. It wasn't violent as Ultimates or Ultimates X-men but it did have that Ultimate feel to it. Also Millar is up there with Hickman on the whole beyond normal science ideas.
The first three arcs were great. While after that it became okay, I myself enjoyed it until its end.
Pull: All-New XMen, Avengers, New Avengers, Uncanny Avengers, Captain America, Indestructible Hulk, Avenging SpiderMan, Superior SpiderMan, Uncanny XMen, Chew, UC:Ultimates, UC:SpiderMan, UC:XMen.
I really enjoyed all of it except for the last arc. Even then the last arc wasn't anywhere near the worst thing to come out of the UU.
1) Find a bad guy
2) Be Wolverine
Ultimate Wolverine is coming back, sort of!
Frightful is excellent. Namor was good up until the silly end. I have to say my favourite is possibly the Ultimatum arc, I really liked that. I wasn't mad on the Thanos story line and I think my least favourite is the President Thor story but all are worth reading. If you like the FF then you will like these, I would suggest reading them all from the beginning
Frightful was a lot of fun. I recommend it.
"President Thor" is a really good time travel, parallel timeline story that really has nothing to do with Thor being president. Its just something in the story. There are parts that will make absolutely no sense in the beginning but it all comes together by the end. Great stuff. I also liked Frightful, the Namor story, Silver Surfer, N-Zone, Thanos and the cosmic cube, God War. If you like sci-fi, you'll have a hard time finding one that you don't like.
Pull List: Uncanny X-Men, All-New X-Men, Ultimates, New Avengers
The opening Bendis/Millar arc is pretty subpar, as should be expected from both writers. Shallow characters and action, pointless dialogue, etc.
Warren Ellis's run after that is awesome.
