I think a lot of issues with, say, the fuzziness of the distinction and definition of terms like "ethnicity" and race, or the potentially-very-different meanings of "non-caucasian", "nonwhite" and "minority" clear up when you pick particular criteria that are relevant to the context of the discussion.
Audience reaction, for instance, when you're thinking of media.
And with visual media, it's easiest to base this on visible traits.
These are complicated issues irl that I think can be made less complicated when you're discussing their use in media.
