Default Punishment that are worst then Death

What are some of the harshest punishement that are worst then death in friction? What was their crime, and who sentences it?

Ex: Not the top but definitely alot of style point given to Doctor Who. The Family of Blood wanted to be immortal so they hunted the Doctor. So the good Doctor became human to hide from them, and fell in love. They took that away from him. Which resulted in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SC0NuBaliLs.

    "Worst then death?"

Well, I suppose the worst possible punishment is eternal awareness with lack of stimuli, or limited and repetitive stimuli.

You would superficially think physical torture was worse, but honestly I figure Terry Pratchett was right: You can psychologically get used to any situation given enough time, and at least active torture is varied and gives some impression your torturer takes any note of your existence whatsoever. Think the Cenobites from Hellraiser: They've been tortured for so long they think of it as a mere extension of their desire to experience the limits of sensation, and wish to make you similarly "enlightened".

Though it's hard to apply "then death" to an eternal torment.

I suppose, therefore that the worst punishment followed by death is to see everything you love painfully and utterly destroyed, followed by an immensely slow and lingering death.

A quote from an old webcomic; "Somewhere, there's a man. He doesn't want to be where he is. There's no place he'd rather be less. This man is suffering, but inevitably, he starts to get used to it. He becomes calm enough to distance himself from his misery, just a little.

And without meaning to, he thinks of a place he'd rather be less. A place which can hurt him in ways he's not currently being hurt. Whether it's a few feet away or in another horrible universe, he's glad he's where he is, and not there.

This is just a fleeting thought. But then he's there. And he'll stay there until he thinks of a place he'd rather be less."

While the posts so far have been just fine, I'm thinking that this thread could go downhill into some pretty awful places, pretty quickly.

So I'm going to leave it classy. Closed.
