I find that most of the anime that I own have varying degrees of fanservice in them, some have a lot and some have very little...as long as it's not really over the top I enjoy it, rather than have it like most American cartoons and such that mostly ignore that sex sells and all of that...Sekerei, High School Of The Dead, Queen's Blade...are just three that have a fair amount of fanservice...I wonder how many anime have a character in them of whom their sole purpose is fanservice...or at least most of their reason for being there...W/B Warpath/Siryn Sam/Tabitha I'll go now............................................... ......

Honestly before I read the title to your thread I was going to start my own about what manga titles would benefit from being redrawn. It seems there are some good stories that suffer and would be better or have a wider appeal if things like gratuitous panty shots and Over-Sexualization of female characters were removed or toned down. Not that I'm saying sexuality is worse than violence because its not I just think over doing it can be off putting for some readers.

I think it would benefit properties like Ikki Tousen, Change 123, Rosario + Vampire, Sekirei, etc, if they were simply redrawn with the forethought of appealing to a wider audience. Don't get me wrong I'm not some censor happy fascist trying to get anime artist to cover up their female characters. Its just that I'm not gonna buy manga that is heavy fan service and thats a shame cuz I really liked Change 123 and would collect it if it wasn't for some of the artwork.

I think it can work in comedies, and sometimes it can lead to some pretty hilarious moments. For the most part though I think it's overdone, there are some Manga I think that would benefit imo from a lot less (HSDK) and I have dropped mangas I otherwise liked because they went crazy with it. It's not a deal breaker within reason but it is annoying especially in otherwise serious situations.
Liked Deadpool before it was cool...

Yeah fanservice that's out of place can really kill an anime if there's enough of it, personally if I'm going to buy an anime then it has to have some fanservice, I just find it annoying when they have one character that's the designated fanservice character that then doesn't get a happy ending, it's their only reason for existing. We could always figure out who is the most oversexualized fanservice lady in anime...I'm sure that there'd be plenty of contendors...W/B Warpath/Siryn Sam/Tabitha I'll go now................................

Some fan service female characters don't bother me because they are written well. Like Faye Valentine or Major Motoko Kusanagi but other times it just seems outa control.

Speaking personally, No Way!!! I absolutely HATE fanservice.

I despise anything that treats women like objects.

Yeah, I enjoy the manga for "Rosario + Vampire", but the anime would be much improved if the 'camera angle' was changed so that the girl's panties aren't on display more often than not. On the other hand the funimation dub for "Dragon Ball" is utterly unwatchable because it's so puritanical it strips all the humor out of the show. For example having Roshi make a deal for Bulma to arrange 'a date with an age-appropriate woman' instead of asking to touch her boobs. It makes zero sense for Bulma to force Oolong to stand-in for her in the dubbed version.

Generally I don't care about fan-service one-way or the other, but I expect a story. If the anime/manga is trying to make it through on fan-service alone I'm just not going to be interested.

Really only hentai reduces women to objects, most fanservice is for humor or to get a viewer's interest, very little really goes overboard, except if perhaps that's all the character exists for or is a young character...yeah even Pokemon had to be changed, that episode where the guy member of team rocket got breasts had to be changed or just not aired...

Personally I like a fair amount of fanservice in my anime, if nothing else for if the story starts to sag a bit...W/B Warpath/Siryn Sam/Tabitha I'll go now.....................................

i am not in favor of censorship. if series-x (whatever series-x is) has fanservice in it then it had damn better still have it when i buy the DVD's or the manga or whatever. i absolutely do not tolerate the following:

I hate censorship as well and I'm not calling for all out censorship but I also think there is a more tasteful way to portray women. Obviously heavy fan service properties exist for that niche market that consumes them. They should even continued to be made if that market will continue to buy them. I'm not trying to say no one should have fan service anime if that's what they like. And I'm certainly not saying they should be censored to appeal to a mass audience at the cost of the original artwork/story. I also agree that if you don't like fan service heavy anime/manga then you don't have to watch/read them. What I am pointing out is they would appeal to a wider audience if they portrayed women more tastefully.

Take the examples of Faye Valentine or Major Motoko Kusanagi I gave earlier. I believe they are slightly fan service-ish and done in a way that is tasteful. As apposed to Sekirei which is more over the top and won't appeal to a mass market. I even enjoy the way fan service is used mostly in humor and that doesn't bother me at all. I'm not saying Sekirei should be redrawn or censored but it won't be accepted by people on bigger scale because basically it is was it is.

The way I look at it is "would I be proud to give this to my daughter, wife, sister, the same way I can show them a Wonder Woman or Batgirl book". If the answer is no then me personally I'm probably not gonna put money into it. If there are others that are then that's fine. They have a right to consume what they want. Also I realize the markets for heavy fan service anime and not necessarily the same as the one who reads Batwoman and Ms. Marvel.

I read the first issue couple issues but was afraid it would turn into the fan service heavy anime so I stopped reading. If its more toned down than the anime I will definitely check it out cuz I like the overall story.

I don't think anyone is calling for censorship in this thread. Most people are just saying that it annoys them when it pops up in unwarranted places and interferes with the real story. Wishing something wasn't there because it detracted someone's personal experience isn't censorship.

My beef with fan service in anime/manga is that most characters just appear to be so young to where it's kind of creepy. I don't want to keep seeing panty shots of school girls.

Well some of those schoolgirls are actually college aged so it's not creepy then...I think that censorship has its place...some just go overboard with it...

I like animes with at least one or two pretty girls/women in it with them wearing not so much...W/B Warpath/Siryn Sam/Tabitha I'll go now..........................

fan service isn't just panty shots and bikini clad buxom bimbos. It can also be the ridiculous gore or over the top action scenes. So I'm ok with fanservice as long as its in moderation and doesn't detract from the anime too much.

True, but they're a lot more fun imho....

The action scenes in many anime tend to go overboard to the point of absurdity...W/B Warpath/Siryn Sam/Tabitha I'll go now..................................
