Fanservice-Yes Please!!! Or No Way!!!

Some love it and some hate it, does to much stop you from buying an anime...how much is to much/not enough...what do you like/hate the most, or is it the reason that you buy an anime...who are the worst and the best at it...

Why is it that Japanese animated shows have far more than American animated shows, is it the culture, as you couldn't get away with half of the average stuff in anime on American anime, even Pokemon episodes have to be edited for fanservice.

Personally I admit that I like for the anime that I watch to have some fanservice, just as long as the girls/women don't look like they're 12 except for the obvious differences. I'll go now..........................

I have a "No decent person is one thing" way of looking at it.

So I really don't have a preference to shy away from or hunt down either extreme. I like and will watch fanservicey anime, and those with little to none. What I look for in each series varies depending on what I feel is the tone and purpose that a series has. So for instance if I felt that a series what trying to be very serious and action focused but had tons of fanservice, I might see that as unnecessary or in the way. But in a series like Queen's Blade, for example, I'd have no problem because the writing is on the wall there.

I like plenty of fanservicy anime--they rarely make their way into my favorites of all time, since usually the more serious stuff makes its way there, but I find plenty of them entertaining. Omamori himari (mainly Manga version), Strike Witches, and Shuffle are some examples of fan service heavy series I've liked. The recent "As long as there's love, it doesn't matter if he's my brother right?" or however that translates was also an entertaning weekly romp.

As to your cultural question, yes Japan is a bit more open about these kinds of thing in their media. Compared with America, you have to understand that a lot of it is because of American culture's history of being *exceedingly* puritanical regarding sexuality. We're a culture afraid of sex and nudity more than we are violence. There are plenty of American cartoons in the last 10 years that have tried to push these boundaries, but they usually have to "Get crap past the radar" with subtlety or double entendre.

I knew about the cultural differences I just wondered if others knew about it, as for me personally I really don't often buy an anime unless there's some fanservice...yeah Queen's Blade is pretty blatant about it, and the upcoming Queen's Blade MMO is probably going to be much the same way. The problem with fanservice comes if it's the basis of the story to a crazy degree or something like that, as for Shuffle I just thought that it'd be better for the main guy to just date them all, solve a lot of problems...Strike Witches is funny the fan service is done more of as a joke, making it hard for me to figure out if some of the characters are gay or just that really close big sister thing that Japan has.

People who make fun of anime I've seen often make fun of the fanservice where physically except for the characters face the lady is definitely a full grown woman but then her face makes her look like she's twelve.. Yeah a little bit of nudity gets the anime, game, show the proverbial book thrown at it, but violence and gore and all is fine, it's not anime but the pilot for StarGate SG1 had a scene of full front female nudity, then never had nudity again. Another fanservice problem imho, is that most Americans still view anything animated as being for kids, a cartoon...much like many people still view all video games as being for kids, but that's another topic. I don't mind fanservice, but it gets anoying reading things like Tenjou Tenge and Ikki Tousen where some decent plots are being strangled with the need to look up someone's skirt every other panel. It causes things like a story about escaping the cycle of fate with heavy references to classical Chinese literature ending up being sold in America as "Battle Vixens."

Yeah, that's why I said "in their media." It becomes a different story entirely in the public reality, where affection and sex are so downplayed, and older generations claw at old ways of thinking.

The censored porn thing is still something I don't understand. You can stop doing that you know; I don't care what laws were influenced by the west. Especially since the west doesn't censor their smut.

PRobably about as much of one as Queen's Blade has, the cultural thing is funny as well in Mexico given how religious that country is while then at the same time when I was there they had streetcorner porno stands selling magazines and shops had clay figures having sex and various body parts...

Aside from that there's plenty of anime where looking up the skirt is a big thing, or they try to be sly about it...yeah most reviews of Ikki Tousen that I"ve seen, and the episodes, don't seem to have much of a connection to any ancient story or whatever...perhaps we should list the top ten offenders of fanservice, Sekerei might be up there...

The anime is really bad and goes way off track.

The manga is better.

But because it's Oh!Great, it still has a ton of cheesecake in it.

I am generally against fanservice if I had to pick a side. Mostly it's just window dressing and it doesn't do much for me and there plenty of series that get on perfectly well without it.

Honestly, fanservice tends to annoy me, especially when it feels...disrespectful toward characters I actually like (HSDK, I'm looking at you!).
But I'm borderline asexual, so, yeah.

I do get annoyed with the panties shots, the way it's often done comes off as rather juvenile to me and cheap way to get a laugh.

It has its place, and when its in its place all is well.

When it's being forced into places it shouldn't go, everything suffers.

It has never stopped me from buying something I liked, and has never actually convinced me to buy anything I don't like.

I'd rather see it than not, if I had to choose between it being there and it not being there.
