Can I get a mod to fix the header? Should be a parenthesis behind Republic. Thanks. And change the first "u" to an "e". I must be drunk typing and don't know it.

A better analogy would be Democrats as the Federation and the Republicans as the Maquis from the episodes of DS9 that first introduced the Marquis. (The Maquis were treated a lot differently later.)
In those episodes the Federation are well-meaning but paternalistic and the Maquis really just want to be left alone.

Palpatine was intended to reflect Julius Ceaser IIRC, high political position, given temporary emergency powers he promised to give back, never actually got around to giving back and instead got more.
