I was never a big fan of the Delano stuff (and I do like some of his other work), but didn't he actually introduce the Red as a concept and had that already been part of the Animal Man mythos?

IIRC he first used the word "Red", but it was basically the same thing Grant Morrison had been calling the Morphogenic Field
