    Dark Reign: Mister Negative #1-3:
The origin of Mister Negative works pretty well, although there are some plot holes in the Betty Brant arc. For a Dark Reign tie-in, Spidey has a fairly big role, and I like the clash between Negative's forces and the Hood.
    7/10

    Web of Spider-Man (2009) #1-7:
There was a formula to the first seven issues, with a villain spotlight, a Spider-Girl chapter and another story in every issue. Spider-Girl, a series with a decade of history, was probably not the right choice for this book. I didn't find those chapters particularly interesting. There is some stuff to recommend, even if some of the stories are repetitive, dealing with stuff we've seen before (Ben Reilly decides to be a hero! Aunt May and Jonah Sr get randy! Adrian Toomes gets his revenge !) I'm not sure what grade to give this, since the cover price wasn't bad and the material is probably available pretty cheap.
    (Generous) 7/10

    Amazing Spider-Man #630-633
The Lizard story is great, and likely the highlight of the Gauntlet era. But this also likely has the best Peter Parker plot of the Brand New Day run, as he tries to find someone to communicate with after a break-up and a tragedy.
    10/10

I was going at a 50 books a week pace. Then I got The Last of Us. It has really slowed me down. I pulled out a bunch of books.

448 (and change, really) after starting the Clone Saga again with the first trade, which collects Power And Responsibility, The Lost Years, Birth Of A Spider-Man/The Double and The Exile Returns as well as an issue of Spider-Man Unlimited and all the snippets of Ben's appearances leading up to his full-time debut in the book (hence the "and change, really").

And I'll tell ya, this first volume is a really good start. The Lost Years and The Exile Returns are particularly good arcs, but the rest of the material holds up well enough and even the bad issues benefit from Bagley, Lyle, Buscema and particularly Steven Butler on art. I'm very much looking forward to reading through the rest of this. This'll actually be my first time reading it all the way through, considering when I was buying Astonishing Spider-Man in the 90s they left huge swathes of it out and I gave up by the time it ended and that my last readthrough had gaps of months in between the trades' release dates.

Have had nothing to do but wait in an empty house for the Internet Man to arrive, so read through the second Clone Saga book, some of the third and the latest issues of Superior, Superior Foes, Ultimate Comics All-New and Avenging (plus an Avenging from May that I missed). The latest issue of Superior Spider-Man had so much in it that made me clench my fist in satisfaction. I'm loving that series.

So, with Back From The Edge (rubbish), Web Of Life (decent), Web Of Death, (a CLASSIC), Funeral For An Octopus (redundant), Spider-Man Unlimited #8 (or "Die Hard On A Spider-Man"), Smoke And Mirrors (nostalgic kicks), Players And Pawns (a bridging arc) and the surprisingly good fun Planet Of The Symbiotes totaling 26 and the other 5, I'm now on 479, with a one-day record of 41 issues. And it ain't over yet.

Couldn't help but laugh at Michelinie resurrecting his cherished 'Mary Jane smokes when she's upset' subplot in Planet Of The Symbiotes. Man, I hated that story first time I read it but this go-around it was a welcome change from the all the existential angst in the main four books.

Read the rest of Book Three, which included The Gift, Aftershocks and The Mark Of Kaine to bring it up to 487. So far, I've experienced no Clone Saga fatigue whatsoever. Some of the stories are awful (Tom Lyle is amongst the worst writers ever to soil the pages of a Spider-book), but it's not BECAUSE they took place during the Clone Saga. I know Maximum Clonage is in the next book, and with it comes Spidercide, New Warriors spinoffs and some truly horrible art, but remain optimistic. I may have hit 500 by the end of the day.

Amazing Spider-Man #634-637: It's a suitably grand conclusion to the Gauntlet saga, as the storyline ties together years of loose ends touching on stories from decades earlier in other runs. I do have some minor quibbles, but they pull off Kraven's resurrection, there are some great twists and it's always fantastic to see Spider-Man when he's pissed.
    A

Web of Spider-Man (2009) #8-10: The Extremist is probably the strongest in Web, as Spidey takes on a new villain inspired by Ditko's objectivism (in a meta not a literal way.) I don't care as much for the manga inspired take on Jackpot in the back-ups.
    B+

Web of Spider-Man (2009) #11-12: The Mary Jane/ Black Cat team-up never quite reaches its full potential, although I do like MJ's search for a missing Spidey.
    B-

Superior Spider-Man #14: Spidey's takedown of Shadowland hits a few snags underneath his notice. Poor Kingpin lookalike.
    A

Scarlet Spider #19: Bonus points for Kaine's morally gray decision.
    B+

Superior Spider-Man Team-Up #1: Fun enough story with Spidey fighting everyone in the Marvel U, with good interactions between him and the Avengers.

Sounds good to me. As long as it doesn't mean the next thread is delayed because Magnum Valentino spends all of January somewhere without internet.

So I finished The Trial Of Peter Parker (4 issues, entertaining), The Jackal Files (total waste of paper) and Maximum Clonage (which is almost definitely one of the largest factors in people's hatred of this period of comics - a total, uncoordinated mess from start to finish, with a spectacularly bad final issue penned by the abysmal Tom Lyle who fails to incorporated events that took place only two issues prior) which took me up to 501.

There's an issue of Amazing in that book where Peter is put on trial by some of his villains under the charge that it's his fault they exist. I know there's an episode of Batman where the same thing happens and was wondering if anyone knew what the first instance of this was and if it dates further back?

Anyway, 500 down. Here's to another!
