To a lot -- very possibly most -- of us, a magazine (or website, or convention, or book, or store, or whatever) -- devoted to comics &/or the collecting thereof is squarely in the "nerd" niche, whether we'd actually use that term or not. Substiitute "sf" or "horror movies" or "baseball cards" or "punk rock" (to name several subcultures in which I've certianly done my time) or "chess" or "gaming" or "anime" or "muscle cars" or whatever for "comics," & that doesn't change a thing.

Let's face it -- sf fans have been known to dismiss non-fans "mundanes," but at that point it's just a matter of vocabulary. It's not a matter of scorn or self-deprecation; it's just reality. I don't consider myself a nerd per se, but very clearly most people would say otherwise. So it goes. Personally, I guess I prefer what might as well be the French translation -- devotee.

I tend to split superhero comics fans into "People who like Krypto" and "People who don't like Krypto."
Basically, if you miss the wonder of a dog flying around in a little Superman cape, you're in the wrong hobby.

Hi DonEMC. Thank you so much for your clarification - It really did touch this old nerd that you took the time to respond. I loved CBG, and hate taht it is gone. I envy you having worked there - bet that was good times!

To clarify, nerd is a title that I proudly carry - so when I apply the term to something, be it a book, show, or magazine, that is a big compliment from me.

And Reptisaurus, I second the motion - a collected "Best of CBG" would be a welcome addition to my collection as well, because I did not c=save many of the old issues - they just took up too much space! I would like to have the entire run on DVD ROM - that would be cool!

Not sure how many here are subscribers, but I just got this info at Tony Isabella's site:

"I received my first copy of ANTIQUE TRADER in the mail today. It's supposed to replace my subscription copy of THE COMICS BUYERS GUIDE now that the latter has ceased to be. I called the publisher to object and they readily offered me a refund of the 2 1/2 years left on my CBG subscription which I accepted.
"That was very nice of them.
"If you've time left on your old CBG sub and would like a refund, call 1-877-300-0247."

I once took a class on non-fiction writing, for which I did a research project on proto-comics, or comic books before Famous Funnies #1. After collecting my A, I sent the paper in to CBG, where it became a three-part article in ... 1995? That, plus one letter printed and one letter from my wife that also got printed, is my history with CBG besides an enthusiastic reader.
Anyway, it is cool for you to acquire acrimony of crumbling time on blast this website.

I had a subscription in the mid 1980's. Back when black & white independents were selling for $25 and silver age comics were selling for 25 cents! Those were the days!
