One of the very first things we see her do in A New Hope is shoot a stormtrooper in the chest. For the rest of the movie, she resists torture, takes over her own rescue, shoots loads more troopers, and helps pilot the Falcon through a dogfight. While I wish she had been a pilot at Yavin, I would suggest that the only reason she wasn't shown as a "ground soldier" is because there was no opportunity for "soldiering" in that first film.

AMEN AMEN AMEN!!! I always thought just this!!! Leia was always right up there for me with Wonder Woman...and, TBH, Miss Piggy (showing my age much??)
