Oh man, Kirito is ridiculous. If what I hear is correct, in the next arc (Gun Gale Online), while everyone else has guns, Kirito decides his primary weapon is going to be a lightsaber. He then starts deflecting and slicing bullets in midair.

I don't see what's so surprising about that when you consider that in his opening fight in Alfheim Online has him running so fast he creates sonic booms in the novels. And that was a fight that he wasn't taking seriously.

It's not so much the speed it takes to intercept bullets (like you say, he's shown that speed before), but that he gets into a situation where everyone else has projectile weapons and he says "what the hell, I'm gonna stick with my sword". And then is awesome with it. Apparently, the lightsaber was a joke until Kirito got his hands on one.

The laser sword is actually an unpopular offhand weapon, carrying the distinction (if I recall right) of being able to bypass armor which pretty much guarantees an instant kill.

The downside being that it's a sword and most people aren't Kirito and thus aren't getting through gunfire to stab people in the face. (People call him crazy because he uses it as his main weapon.)
