It's never really been for me. I'm the guy that never got on board for Star Trek and the like either though.

Star spanning adventures are okay in thier own right. I'm actually reading Maximum Security again this past couple days. But I like them best as an arena to visit. I can't be arsed to keep up with the status of all the different cosmic races at any given time.

Cosmic Marvel is REALLY REALLY REALLY GOOD.

Which is why I hate how they're mainstreaming it to be about Earth and adding Iron Man. BLECK!

That's what cosmic fans said as well, but apparently they are guarding Earth.

I was kind of disappointed in the Abnett/Lanning dance, to be honest.

That's speaking as someone for whom Space Opera is a favorite genre.
I've also liked what I've seen of other Abnett/Lanning comic work and enjoy Abnett's 40k novels (the only part of that franchise I care for, to be honest).

After hearing so many people recommend it, I gave GoTG a generous shot, and my reaction never really advanced beyond "Erm, this is fine and all but I'm not really getting the mind-blowingness of which I've heard tell,"

So I dropped it after...three trades' worth, maybe?

Picked it back up at Thanos Imperative and felt the same.

Perhaps I caught me a case of over-hype.

Read Annihilation and Annihilation Conquest, the stuff they didn't write.

    I want to.

I mean, I love Keith Giffen, and just hearing summaries of the event really excites me.

Still waiting on that omnibus, though, Marvel.

I think people like me are to blame for this though. I can't be bothered to care about cosmic events for thier own sake, but if you toss in a couple of Avengers, I suddenly care. :p

I think this new direction is to capture fair weather fans that have hopped on for 'events' but don't pick up the series'.

Eeeh, the Guardians - in their relevant form anyhow - didn't get their start until the end of Annihilation: Conquest.
Which is where Giffen wrapped up what he was doing and handed it off to Abnett/Lanning as I recall.

The problem with DnA GoTG as a means for catching up before the movie is that the team that's been advertised in the movie promo stuff consists largely of characters who DnA didn't lean heavily on (unless their focus somehow managed to change drastically in the last third of the run that I didn't read, in which case people are welcome to correct me).

Star Lord and maybe Rocket excepted.

A couple of those characters apparently had important plotlines in Annihilation, but the team wasn't a thing yet.

I really hate how they have to cater to people with your tastes...Ugh.

I mean, test characters outside your comfort zone! You'd love them!

Honestly, I hate it too actually. They keep tossing characters that have been relatively easy to follow into everything lately. It used to be that to follow Cap you needed only a couple books a month. Now, he's in five or six a month...on a slow month.

Keeping tabs on all of the Avengers has become an impossibility over the past decade.

    Thank Jesus!

    spoilers:
I mean, I really wanted to love the badass gay Space Paladin and all, but

there's only so much being-written-all-over-the-gatdamn-place-for-the-sake-of-plot-contrivances that I can take.

The woman has been both Captain Marvel and Quasar, for jeez's sake. She shouldn't be jerked around in such a way.
