Truthfully, I have not read The Fellowship of the Ring in a long time but I seem to remember reading three different short essays on the history of Middle Earth, The One Ring and Biblo's adventures. They seemed to have been entitled "The Red Book", "Concerning The Rings of Power" and "The Third Age". EA Games also released an awesome video game based off of "The Third Age" intro and it is called Lord of the Rings: The Third Age.
the third age was a decent game, gameplay wise at least. but the story, and some of the compromises they made to fit in LOTR scenes were pretty appauling.

Exactly. Despite the fact that the movies have brought in a ton of money, though perhaps not for the family, and garnered a lot of new fans of the series, the Tolkien family hates the movies. So they will not sell the rights to any other of Tolkien's works. At least not for the foreseeable future.

That's LAME! LAME! That's exactly why there haven't been any more Chronicles of Narnia movies as well which is an absolute shame. I love both the Narnia and LOTR movies.

@idlewildered, Well I kinda figured there would be compromises in terms of games. I think that the Lord of the Rings games are absolutely fun to play in terms of games themselves totally aside from the books although War in the West was a bit lackluster.

Yeah, that was Tolkein's model for the character. His academic work doesn't get the same attention as his fiction, but Tolkein the philologist concentrated in medieval language and culture. He was the guy who unlocked the key to the so-called "bob and wheel" present in much Anglo-Saxon poetry, which enabled him to translate Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. A lot of that background made it into his books. For example, Rohan is clearly reminscent of Anglo-Saxon culture and their names and language reflect this. (To bring this to the games, LoTR Online takes the Anglo-Saxon elements of Rohan and extrapolates on it, giving the Dunlendings, their oppostion, a very early Briton/Welsh feel, Enedwaith and Dunland having many threats from Welsh folklore, etc.)

No argument there. I agree that the family should relax. More people know about Tolkiens work now than did before the films came out. They need to see that as a good thing and chill out about it. The films were awesome. They brought back the Fantasy genre.

Right on homie! You're on fire. Charles Williams, J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis (The Inklings) were all Old World History, Lore, European Language and Christian Theology students in college at Oxford. Tolkien even worked for the Oxford English Dictionary and graduated with Old Norse as his special subject. In the middle school Christian Art academy which I attended (MAFA) we studied both Tolkien and CS Lewis in our World History classes.
