Default Throwdown!! "dying wish" vs "the other"

Well, I feel like we need to do this one: the 2 big stories where Peter/Spidey has "died" in epic fashion. Let's vote/discuss this as purely the stories themselves as much as possible and not the fact that Peter emerged with new powers following "The Other" and let's not try to look ahead and project what we think will come with Peter's inevitable return from "Dying Wish". As always, please vote and share your thoughts on what you think was the better story arc. Have At Thee!!!

Well, Dying Wish was still a good story (and I'm hoping Spidey is much more Peter than we think), while the Other was just garbage. Easy one!

Haven't read Dying Wish but The Other was a pretty messy execution of ideas.

The JMS/Peter David issues seemed to try as best it could to make it all work and the basis behind it was pretty interesting since JMS had certain seeds that it payed off to but Axel Alonso really dropped the ball on that one on both the editor and story fronts.

It does have some redeeming qualities though such as the strong Peter/MJ characterization, Mike Wieringo/Mike Deodato's art, and Peter David's usage of Tracer and Ms. Arrow as new Spider-Man villains.

Outside of Morlun just randomly coming back for no explained reason, I thought The Other was an ok story. Not Amazing like it should have been for such a long event. Not exactly a great plan considering the Queen story they told not long before it, but ok.

I thought Dying Wish was lame. So The Other for me.

The Other was alright. Though it was...what...5 or 6 issues or so? Dying Wish was only three and was better executed IMO

If my memory is correct The Other was 12 issues.

And I think we need to see how the fallout from Dying Wish plays out before we can judge it. I heard that Slott has been telling people he still has one more trick up his sleeve...

Not even close in my view: "The Other" was awful not because it was poorly written, but because of the impact on the origin.

Ditto, hands down, country mile and all that shit. I love Dying Wish, I loathe The Other.
Why should I want to make anything up? Life's bad enough as it is without trying to invent any more of it.

This is a hard choice...i just read Dying Wish so it is freshly a letdown...and The Other was a letdown when i read it too, but not as fresh in my mind right now while i'm voting...so i went with too close to call. I'd have to re-read Other for a better, fresher, fair comparison.

In some ways the Other is worse...pop out claws and eye eating lol....however, Dying Wish leads to a newly numbered, newly titled series...so Dying Wish is somewhat worse in that what should just be a small Freaky Friday type arc is being used to mess up the spider-man numbering system again, in what we all know will eventually lead back to the return of Spider-Man and regular numbering/title. So in this sense, Dying Wish is more gimmicky and typical.

Maybe after this Doc Ock can become the next Venom. Or he could just be Doc Ock, since he is an iconic character in and of himself. I'd much rather read Doc Ock stuff instead of one of the sinister six trying to be a spider-man....as a premise of a new series. So in this respect, it was a poor poor send off to Peter Parker in the regular marvel universe especially when Ultimate Spider-man Peter Parker got a touching send off.
"Superior New Day" is temporary: but maybe Juggernaut can be the new She-Hulk! And Skeletor can be Battle Cat. Darth Vader can be Princess Leia in the new Superior Star Wars! Unleash the Whacken!

In terms of how he actually died, The Other is by far the better. Died a hero and... heroically.

Both of them are pretty bad.

The Other ran on for too long but had little impact afterwards for Peter. It worked out pretty well for Kaine, though.

Dying Wish was thankfully quite short but began a new status quo. So in this sense, The Other is more tolerable.
    Bad news everyone...

Did I miss something? What impact did "The Other" have on the origin?

That is like saying JMS changed the origin...

The Other had a great fight scene between Peter and Morlun. Both in Coming Home and The Other, those two really beat the crap out of eachother.

As far as stories go, I think Dying Wish is a better story. The Other was too long and a lot of it was just useless to the story. It had great potential. I liked the dream sequence where he embraced his other self while he was being reborn. I didn't have a problem with him shedding his skin and being reborn anew because it's basically described as a spider power he can use once in his life; no different than wall crawling with the exception that he can only use it once.

Dying Wish is better and I think the return of Peter Parker is going... hold up, I know the return of Peter Parker is going to much more satisfying with Slott's story.

With all that said, I voted for The Other because the death of Peter Parker was done much better. Above everything else, he died fighting to his last breath in his own body. I have no problem with Peter dying in Ock's body but if you're asking me what I perfer, I perfer Peter fighting in his body till he literally cannot fight anymore.

Peter's death is more satisfying in the Other because the Avengers, MJ, and poor Aunt May all know about it.

    The art is beautiful.

JMS involved religion quite a bit in his run and the prayer Peter says while he lay dieing was a nice way to tie up that thread.

    The art is really beautiful.

Doc Ock - I'm Peter Parker.
Peter Parker - Not anymore Spider-Man. From now on I'm Peter Parker.

    Good post Ryan. - Oldschool

I cannot recommend Scarlet Spider enough, but here's trying.
