Default Confused about "Amazing Spider-Man By JMS Ultimate Collection"

Hi right I used to read a few comic books as a kid and Spiderman was always been my favorite superhero and Ive just started rereading comics and i bought this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Amazing-Spid...7178937&sr=8-4 to start reading Spiderman again and I'm just over half way through and im loving it and its been put to no.1 priority over reading all of my other comics and im already thinking about ordering the next and starting Superior Spiderman soon when i comes out and ANYWAY... my questions are:

The first issue in this collection is called "Amazing Spider-Man #30" and I am wondering why is it only #30 when i know Spiderman comics started in the 60s and the art in this is quite obviously fairly modern does this mean it is a remake of older comics? And my other question is if this is #30 is there anyway and if so what books/volumes would i have to by to get them?

I realise i probably sound like a complete idiot to all you hardcore comic book fans on here so any help would be appreciated and thank you in advance :)

No, Amazing Spider-Man was relaunched with a new #1 in the late 1990s. JMS took over with #30 of that volume. The title returned to its original numbering when the cumulative number reached #500.
The monster saved them all. And in their fear, they betrayed him. As they always have. As they always will.

ASM ended in 1999. It was rebooted as a number 1. The JMS collection begins in ASM volume 2. Eventually, as the book came closer to issue 500, the original numbering was reinstated. So ASM number 30 is also and really, ASM 471.

    Hope that helps.

Doc Ock - I'm Peter Parker.
Peter Parker - Not anymore Spider-Man. From now on I'm Peter Parker.

He says he's enjoying the stories. I really liked the JMS run, beginning to end.

I totally dig the Michelinie. I liked Morlun as a villian. The Marvel Universe have way too many villains that aren't really villians. Morlun was a villian. He just wanted to kill Peter. It was interesting to put Peter in that situation. A situation where not only is he fighting for his life, but to actually save his own life he might have to take another in self-defense.

RyanParkerMan summed it up pretty well. Glad you're enjoying it! I think JMS tends to fly off the rails once John Romita Jr leaves, but I'll leave that up to you to decide.
