Still I have to say I miss the classic cover aesthetic of the Silver and Bronze age, hyperbolic text and all. Many modern covers are like gallery pieces, beautiful but static, but they lack that dynamics of the classic covers that needed to sell the books in the past.

That's not how they look on the interiors. I think Paolo Rivera (who did the interiors and the covers) was just trying to give them a goblin/gargoyle look to enhance woodcut feel of the piece.

He's an amazing artist with an awesome blog that features a ton of his work.

I agree with you MRP. As I'm scanning last year's covers, I'm thinking the same thing, although there are def some gems as you guys have shown.

I read the first issue, and liked it, and haven't read it since due to limited budgets, like we all do. It seems Waid has another hit on his hands by taking Matt back to his roots after he snaps in Shadowland.

I am a total sucker for all things Paolo Rivera, and his cover here of Matt just having some childish fun captures the new mood of the book very well.

Since Malibu's run with the character, I've grown to like Tarzan more and more. Purists will balk, but I like this Yeates cover.

The King is dead, but now and then we can still catch some of that Kirby Krackle. I wish this would go on forever. Thanks Tom Scioli.

I'm not usually a variant cover kind of guy but I loved last year's "Year of the Monsters" covers that Mike Mignola did on some of his books. There were all great but these were my favorites:
