"New Avengers" #1 from Jonathan Hickman and Steve Epting is really a Black Panther story in disguise. The New Avengers aspect is there, but most of it is either background or impenetrable.

Seriously?! This was a much better story than Avengers 1! Why are people bashing it?!
So CBR is telling me Deadpool #1 is better than this
o cbr reviews, u so crazy
This review is absurd, no one complained that Avengers 1 felt like an Iron Man or Captain America book. This was fantastic. I actually think it was better than Avengers 01, and I loved Avengers
Why are storytellers not allowed to take their time? To each their own I guess, but I don't like that the main complaint seems to be that things weren't spelled out right away.
DH: Dream Thief
DC/Vert: Bats, Bats/Supes, Supes Unchained, The Wake
Image: Saga, East of West, Dream Merchant
Marvel: SSM, DD, Hawkguy, UXM, ANXM, XM, WatXM, Aveng, NA, UA
I personally like Hickman's long-form storytelling. I think that some people feel that he works better in graphic novel form, but if you know that he plays the game a certain way then he should be given a bit of trust that the payoff will be good further down the line. I agree with the poster who says that this was stronger than Avengers #1 which was beautifully drawn but left me feeling indifferent.
They are, within reason, and this does stretch the bonds of reason just a little bit. A lot of titles in Marvel Now have that problem. You could call it "Writing for the Trade" but given the episodic nature of the medium, it's better to have more than just set up.
I can't really disagree with CBR's reviews that much. I may quibble (HA!) but it was decent setup. The cannon fodder was better setup than some OTHER cannon-fodder Marvel offed recently and the villain is muddy a bit but not uninteresting. The build up to the final splash was well done as well. I'd have rather had the book open with the New Illuminati talking and setting it up, then have page 3 be "Why did you bring us together again, T'challa?", cutting to the meat of the issue. Ending with T'challa giving them a stern look together.
I don't believe in halves, so I'd give it 3/5 if I'm being generous.
"Curse you, Occam's Razor! You have betrayed me!"
Reviewing is a lot like paleontology: the evidence is there, but no one seems to agree on it.
You know, I never heard this complaint for Ultimates #1, which only had two members show up in the issue. And it was completely about Captain America.
