That was my original training. I'm trying to remember about henges and dolmens. There are a number of dolmens in that region but the primary building material in the East and Southeast would be wood, which doesn't hold up well unless it is in a bog or, like the image you posted, underwater. Stonehenge is on the border of stone construction and it has always attracted attention with the having to bring the building materials from a far region; it also, nearby, has the remnants of a wood henge so it is a nice blend of the two styles.

Just had an odd phone call. It was a guy I went to school with who I see now and then because he's a local pharmacist. His wife is also my youngest son's English teacher.

Apparently they want me to run for the local school board against the sitting chairman of the board. I know that there are a large number of teachers who are not happy with the current board or the current Superintendent. And I've seen a significant decline in the quality of the school district since my kids started school 11 years ago. I've actually thought about it at times, so the idea that there are people who want me to do it and there'd be support is pretty encouraging.

On the other hand it would be time consuming as hell. And I know and get along with the guy I'd be running against, even if I think he's doing a pretty lousy job. His wife and my wife are friends. So there's that to consider.

So the family and I are going to sit down and discuss it this weekend and decide.

I don't want to discourage you from a noble calling, but be aware of what you're getting into. Education is so fucked up right now that I don't think anyone can make a significant change. As long as schools are under-funded and required to administer multiple standardized tests, morale and performance will remain low. So unless you have access to a money tree and have the political chutzpah to reverse NCLB, it's a pretty hopeless cause.

I don't want to discourage you from a noble calling, but be aware of what you're getting into. Education is so fucked up right now that I don't think anyone can make a significant change. As long as schools are under-funded and required to administer multiple standardized tests, morale and performance will remain low. So unless you have access to a money tree and have the political chutzpah to reverse NCLB, it's a pretty hopeless cause.

Two years ago the legislature rammed through a bill that was a wholesale change in pretty much every way that education was to work in the state with absolutely no testimony and no input from teachers, patrons...pretty much anyway. It was spearheaded by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and was instantly controversial. We forced the whole thing to be put on a ballot for approval as three initiatives and all three went down in flames by pretty wide majorities. Our school board then went back to the legislature and asked them to re-adopt the exact same measures that had been voted down. And they had all been defeated in our county. They simply seem to be out of touch and they are definitely unpopular with the current teachers.

Still haven't decided...but in the back of my mind I'm thinking that this cannot hurt me when the next judgeship opens up locally as well.
