Many of our holidays are somebody's birthday:

MLK day
President's Day
Christmas (coke to the other nerds)

A birthday is celebrating that someone is born. It makes total sense to recognize someone on that day.

But I sort of agree with you that celebrating Tolkien's birthday or Elvis's birthday seems pretty silly.

I suppose it depends on how far you go to celebrate. Throwing a big party with presents and everything, rather odd for the occasion. Staying in and watching the Lord of the Rings movies or listening to "From Elvis in Memphis," though, sound reasonable if you're a fan.

If you think that comic book creators are enjoying a new Golden Age of fair treatment, guess again. Here's an example of the scumbaggery that's passing for industry standards these days. KaBoom!'s line of licensed kids' comics is not only work-for-hire, creators are given a work-for-hire agreement to sign AFTER they've created the work. And the page rates? A whopping $100 a page for finished artwork and $200 for covers. But that's not enough for KaBoom!'s owners. After only about a year of publication, their ADVENTURE TIME funnybook has spawned ADVENTURE TIME: COVER SHOWCASE 1, a $3.99 "comic" that reprints all of AT's cover variations, a publication that cost KaBoom! almost nothing to produce, since all of the covers had already been paid for at an insanely low rate. I guess all the very popular artists of the time were copied, but it was a tad harder to ape Jim Lee's style, or Todd's.

Jim Lee's wasn't that hard to imitate, because there's a visual logic to it. There's less in Todd's, and absolutely none in Liefeld's, because Liefeld's was 75% rehashes of other people's art already.

Its horrible behavior but doesn't shock me that Boom is doing this. Because I'm sure 90% of those books are licensed and Boom has to pay a license fee to do them. I doubt they are making much at all sales wise on them.

Partially Faded Hand Stamp Undermining Everything Prosecutor Says

DALLAS—Members of the jury convened for the case of Texas v. Guillermo admitted Friday they were distracted from the closing arguments of Dallas assistant district attorney Paul Hagsbury after noticing a faded bar stamp on the back of his left hand. “He was saying something about evidence definitively linking the defendant to drug trafficking, but every time he made a hand gesture, all I could do was look at that ink stamp,” said juror Margaret Sanders, adding that she could have sworn she saw Hagsbury idly brushing glitter out of his hair on his way into the court room. “The logo looks really familiar. It’s definitely from someplace I’ve been before. Maybe it’s Lucky Mabel’s?
