I didn't see the animated movie because I know it's going to be too terrible for words. I want a big budget Dragonlance movie made by Joss Whedon, so it's extra nerdy and awesome.

I find most traditional fantasy a hard go nowadays. I'm good with light fantasy; Pratchett, Christopher Moore, Robert Rankin, Tom Holt.

I translated half of one of his books into German once for pretty decent money per page... But it was damn hard work because 80% of his humor is pun based.

I think the rule to NOT discuss other posters is a pretty good and understandable rule (even if it is boring), since this place can become gossip central pretty fast, and that's not really fair. I do think we should be able to talk (in a meta-textual way, not specific way) about other threads. That prohibition seems to be leftover from the YABS / COMM tension days.

Maybe I will try the earlier versions. It was over 10 years ago, so I can't remember what I tried to read, but I think it was the later books. And they were terrible.

That's a silly rule, which is probably why it's not totally enforced. In real life, if we were sitting at a bar, we would discuss whatever the fuck we wanted, and that's what Rita's should be. I like to think of Cronin as the big adorable bouncer who doesn't make me wait in line, and if someone gets too mean, he'll throw them out until they sober up.

I think it depends on the context. I will make the odd joke about other threads, and sometimes I just need to yell and can't find that stupid out of context angry thread, but I also wouldn't want Rita's to turn into a place where other posters get bullied in private, and I don't think we need Cronin to tell us not to behave in that manner, that's just politeness 101. We seem to police ourselves pretty well in that regard, in my opinion. Except for you. You're a fucking asshole!

Start with The Chronicles Trilogy, because it is not terrible. Most of the books that spawned from this main story are fucking terrible, and only worth reading if you love the characters so much that you would read a bubblegum wrapper if it meant "seeing" them again. Which is why I read them... once.

The English translators of Asterix, Anthea Bell and Derek Hockridge, always tried to stick as closely to the original joke as the translation would allow, but in some cases they had to throw the pun out altogether and replace a brand new one.

A good example is in Asterix in Britain where the melon gag has been completely rewritten for an English translation from the original French gag.
