Why are you angry? It's a comic book. He'll be back. It's ok.

Hey honestly, if you really don't like it don't read it. And if you're looking to read Peter's journey, go back and pick up back issues. Have you read every single issue of ASM? Probably not. Go back and read the 80's. It's awesome.

This is true, but you know how the old saying goes, that even a joke has some truth in it? Well even this can have some truth into how he sees things, and that's why I'd really like to know how he feels about things fully.

And killing two birds with one stone is another old saying. Wacker can be putting that out to drum up attention and reaction through sales, as well as speaking his truth as well.

Could the Steve Wacker on this forum be a fake, it could just be that he writes the replies quickly, has anyone else noticed this?
Could you have been the only person who noticed that Wacker mis spells words on CBR?

    Answer: No

I believe I've explained pretty thoroughly why I'm angry, or more actually, displeased. Maybe you could go back to the first page and read what I'm saying and try to understand that I'm not saying any of this to be a jerk or rain on Slott or Wacker's parade. I respect Wacker, and love and respect Dan.

I already also declared that I'll give Dan leeway as he deserves it, but that I'm not excited about this just because, and that if I don't like it, I will in fact stop supporting it.

And why exactly should I and many, many others have to resort to going back and re-reading back issues when we should still be reading the journey of the real Peter Parker? I'm not saying Dan can't tell his story, but that response is tired and played out.

it reeks of, "If you don't like America, then you can just get out!"

In fact, I'm tired of seeing both that and "He'll be back in a year /by ASM 2" as responses entirely.

Well I don't know what to tell you man. It's great that you're being respectful. When I was pissed off at OMD 5 years ago, I was anything but respectful. And I regret that. But that era allowed me to go back and read some great Spider-Man stories, and reading trades and omni's are way more fun than reading individual issues. haha

In the grand scheme of things, you're actually really lucky. The marriage is never ever coming back. But Peter Parker is. It stinks your this upset but take a little comfort in the fact you'll get your fix back. But not yet. This happened and it's going to be like this for awhile.

Hey come to think of it, i'm a marriage fan and I have to deal with Ock kissing MJ?!? Hey Steve and Dan f off!!! (this is a joke moderators) haha

Yeah, I was more indifferent about the marriage being dissolved then, and now I think I understand more on why fans were so enraged back then, though this story isn't quite in the same league of terribleness as OMD.

But thanks for responding to me and trying to give a suggestion respectfully.

That was pretty awesome too. As a long time Spidey reader, I look for good stories. Good = entertaining. I was excited because I literally had no idea what was going to happen next. I mean, who could believe that Spider-Man would actually die and Doc Ock would replace him in Spider-Man's own body?

That is so cool. I've never read any comic where the arch nemesis took over a super heroes life for an entire run, and that's exactly what we're going to get. There's no reason not to like what's going on now. It's new. It's fresh. It's sexy. And wait for this....

    It's not permanent!!!
    Nothing in superhero comics are!
    Not even 20 year marriages!
Why get all upset over something that's not going to last.
Whether it's a year or two years, I think 3 would be the max, Peter Parker is going to return.
In the interim, I get new stories, new twists, new turns, it could be fun.

And if it stinks, I'll drop it with little fuss if I fuss at all on the internet. Life is to short and baby, it's cold outside.
First actual solid reasoning from someone. I think you have to agree most of what we get are...well I dont think i have to name the posters..everyone must groan when they post by now.

I've been reading since way back in the 70s and I was one of the few that gave one more day a chance and was the single voice that wanted Ben Reilly to live. Nothing about this story seems right or fresh IMHO though.

I have read every single spidey comic but I'll take the suggestion you gave to another person and start re-reading the 80s ones in my collection. I loved that era.

If they bring Peter back within the year I am all there for that. Hell if they brought back Ben Reilly to kill the Ock-Spidey I am there for that. If this is a multi-year story. There is very little Marvel can do to keep me. Aside from Scarlet Spiderman and Hawkeye they pretty much have lost me to the DC relaunch which I found much more interesting an ballsy than the half-hearted Marvel Now.

Ryan is one of the most thoughtful and cool posters here and all-around awesome guy.

Pblimp, I know you don't wanna hear "PP will be back in a year" but I have to say that----by and large----when these dramatic moves are made to shake up a title, they usually result in increased dramatic tension, new story situations and---most importantly---a renewed appreciation for our hero when he returns (and he usually returns somewhat changed with a new mindset/approach).

So----I guess what I'm saying is these sort of shakeups are really kind of necessary every so often or else the characters all fall prey to the dreaded staleness. No one is immune----not even the great Stan Lee who was in a creative lull late in his run on ASM and gave our hero 6 arms only to leave the title for a few months, returned and wrote some pretty bland issues before Gerry Conway came on and killed off Gwen to ---wait for it----shake things up. It's all part of the comic book "circle of life", man. Hang in there and I hope you dig it again when PP is back, if not sooner.

Default Does Marvel take their fans for gullible fools? Spidey related

With all the negativity surrounding ASM 700 it seems appropriate to remind people that when Marvel says "it's permanent" they are just plain lying to people just to create hype to sell more of their books.

I think that Marvel assumes that all of their fans are brain dead readers who will gooble most of everything up when they put dead, or end of series or something else in their title and publicity.

How many characters did Marvel kill off so far just to bring them back and fans still fall for that trap over and over and over by buying tons of copies of over hyped said issue. Spider-man being yet again a victim of that stupid thread.

The problem with these stories is that when the hero comes back, all the books you read from the death to the return will be worth less than toilet paper after that. Marvel will have taken your money with their artificially hype storyline and will run away with it.

Marvel has lost the ability to generate sales thru good storyline and art. Now their gimmick is to create "gimmick events" as much as they can logically make so that people buy their book. This all started with Quesada who kicked things in high gear when he was EIC and it seems that Marvel is happy to keep it going.

A damn shame that people are so faithful to a company that has to basically prostitute itself now to sell books since they cant seem to be able to do it any other way.

But the bright side is that people are starting to wake up now and are actually starting to blast the creators of these "gimmick" events and i like it. I hope that this becomes a big wake up call at Marvel and that they are thought a lesson that you cant take fans for idiots for a very long time without suffering the consequences in the long run!

    oh c'mon people!

    Peter Parker cant go away!

    Why?

He is a copyrighted character and probably registered as a trademark via association with Spider-Man.

So no, he is not going to go away. Marvel would not let his name fall into public domain so that someone else can catch the name and make money out of it!

So you can bet your last most cherished comic book that Peter Parker will be back for sure. its is a no brainer.!

It is ridiculous, but it's also ridiculous that anyone would get upset by it. Of course frigging Doctor Octopus is not going to be Spider-Man permanently. Just listen to how ridiculous that sounds. How would they even market it or make a movie out of it? They can't. So it's temporary, we all know it's temporary and I think its all in good fun and its just funny. Marvel wants to sell some funny books. Let them. Why get worked up about it? It's not personal.

Yeah, like when they killed off Cap and replaced him with Bucky! All those stories were terrible. Oh, wait...they totally kicked ass. Definitely classic Cap. Pretty indispensible, really. Worth much, much more than toilet paper. Hmm. Ok, so that was a bad example. So...how about when they killed the Human Torch? Oh hell...those stories were pretty awesome too. Some damn fine FF issues. Yep, I'm sure glad they wrote those.

So...all this leads me to think that, gee, maybe something equally good is in store for Spidey. Whew! Glad we cleared that up. I was starting to worry.

I should probably add that it's not news that nothing is permanent in comics. You might as well run around tell people the sky is blue while you're at it.

And is Marvel going to tell everyone "hey, this will all be undone in six months!" or two years, or whatever and lay out exactly where the book is heading? Umm, no. That'd be like if J.K. Rowlings had sent out a synopsis of every Harry Potter before they were published or if the makers of the new Star Wars movie published the screenplay for everyone to read ahead of time. Stories unfold at the pace the storytellers want them to unfold and that's nothing exclusive to Marvel. It's universal.

Couldn't agree more. But I guess in the fans' case, like the old saying, "I wish I could quit you...".

While I actually agree with basically everything you wrote, the unfortunately truth is that the 'gimmick events' still work.

Apart form the insane media attention, ASM #700 apparently already sold 250.000 copies in print alone.

In a way, I really hope these gimmicks would only provide a temporary boost, but would kill future sales by frustrating much of the readership. But nowadays I have my doubts that's ever the case.

But who knows, right? Hopefully people that disagree with the direction Slott is taking Spidey won't really buy Superior Spider-Man.

There is a segment of fandom that would label any story designed to get attention as a gimmick simply because they resent the idea of anyone outside of the fan community becoming interested in what they believe to be their exclusive world. Comics have been employing "gimmicks" - new #1's, team-ups, deaths, new costumes, weddings, one hero passing the torch to another, final issues - for a very long time, longer than most posters on here have even been alive. Be grateful for these "gimmicks" as one of them likely inspired you to read comics in the first place.
