"It is wrong to assume that art needs the spectator in order to be. The film runs on without any eyes. The spectator cannot exist without it. It ensures his existence." -- James Douglas Morrison
Impossible to say for sure, but this one is a possibility:

"If you can't say anything good about someone, sit right here by me." - Alice Roosevelt Longworth, on manners
"It's not whether you win or lose, it's whether I win or lose." - Peter David, on life
My comic reading had two parts. Through out the 60s when I read various comics (Spider-Man, FF, Green Lantern, Archie) sporadically.
Occasionally buying them here or there or reading a friends book.
Then starting in 1970 I became an avowed collector, mostly Marvel but others thrown in. Buying books weekly at the drug store or 7-11.
And the comic that started that was undoubtedly Conan The Barbarian #1.

I think my first comic was G.I. Joe 1 or the annual that reprints it. Probably the annual. It's long gone beaten and reread a million times. From G.I. Joe to Secret Wars 2 to Batman and to full on addiction.
