He said that he had a couple more movies left and then he was going to stop. He's got "Hit Somebody" which was developed as a feature film, but is now going to be a mini-series. And now he's got "Clerks III", which he announced last month.

After "Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back", Smith was going to stop telling stories within that universe. This then lead to "Jersey Girl" and from that came "Clerks II". After that, he moved on to "Zack & Miri Make A Porno", "Cop Out" and "Red State". The rest is what I said to Kalen.

"Chasing Amy". The only films of his that were complete bombs were "Mallrats", "Jersey Girl" and "Zack & Miri".

Yep. And all because he self distributed. He didn't have to rely on a studio to do it.

They tend to do better on video. Clerks 2 opened to only about $10M. Zack & Miri Make A Porno may have been a box office bust but I think it's one of Kevin's best movies.

Dogma did rather well, or were you lumping in all the View Askew movies under the Clerks banner?

If you read the article it says the movie he planned to be the last was turned into a TV mini series, so he had a spot open off for his last film.

    Sequel to Chasing Amy?

Zack&Miri was a flop? The way I kept hearing about it I'd assumed it had done well.

Oh, his stuff does incredibly well on video, including the "Evening With" videos.

Let's see what Box Office Mojo says.

    -"Clerks" made $3,151,130.

    -"Clerks II" made $26,983,776.

    -"Mallrats" made $2,122,561.

    -"Chasing Amy made $12,021,272.

    -"Dogma" made $30,652,890.

-"Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back" made $33,788,161.

-"Jersey Girl" made $36,098,382. It barely broke even with it's budget.

-"Zack & Miri" made $42,105,111. Looks like it made a profit, but not a huge amount.

-"Cop Out" made $55,583,804. Similar to his last film.

So, only one was a hard bomb and another was a bomb, but still made money. Just not a profit.

Jersey Girl was a bomb . It didn't even really break even once ya consider the marketing budget was $15 million on top of the $35 million budget. It only made $25+ million here in the US. Overseas it did $10 million but not all of that goes directly to the studio.

It was his only real bomb of his movies and one many will bring up a lot .

I really enjoyed Zack and Miri although I often wonder how the film would have been had Rosario Dawson had been able to take that role.

I would've begged for it to be NC-17.

Same here. It's the only one I actually bought the DVD for... and the special anniversary DVD, at that.

He's always said he thought that as he aged he would revisit Dante and Randall so he's probably going back to that well because he has more stories in mind to tell with them. Neither Clerks I or Clerks II were ever about making money. They were about making a movie with his friends FOR his friends. He's just been fortunate that other people have been able to relate and like them.
Last I heard he was planning to do Hit Somebody as a miniseries instead of two movies.

Since Red State didn't even come out in like 98% of theatres im not sure how you could say it was a big deal.

For a guy that has been making movies for as long as he has, it's interesting to note how he refuses to grow as a director.
Although, Red State wasn't bad, even if it was a mish mash of more talented directors' styles. It was at least different.
I dug Smith's movies when I was in my mid twenties and 30 or so...I think most of his fans grow up. His stuff definitely feels like it's in a bubble.

True...it later became a cult classic on home video and has had 2-3 releases on it. Jersey Girl I doubt will ever do what Mallrats has done and become a hit on home video.

This was explained to someone in another thread. Smith toured the country and aired the film. He would charge people to watch and then do Q & A's. The little it did on release and what Smith did helped it recoup the budget. After that Smith signed a nice PPV/Streaming deal for it and made a pretty nice bit of a change . Its why Smith is thinking to do the same exact deal with a Clerks III and cash in again.
