Agreed, I was just about to drop it from my pull list, but now I'll keep it a few more months. Still, as a 3.99 title, it shouldn't be "meh".

I recently read for the first time Kelley's run on JLA up to the Obsidian Age arc, it's frigging great. I'll just have that as my preferred version of a Justice League - Atlantis storyline TYVM.

I might check back in this current volume of JL when it makes a turn on the bend (ie changes writers)

I find that Johns tends to glom on to certain characters and then lose interest. Plus, he tends to give some characters the Mary Sue treatment. And you can also tell which characters he either doesn't care for or is simply indifferent to.

Their differences however are that while Waid may have a more complex writing skills he lacks Johns' ability for long term planning, huge action stories and the creation of interesting antagonists (Waid's stories tend to go nowhere after a while and his villains are just "meh"). Overall, I would say that I prefer Johns for those reasons.
Funny, I would say the criticism of Waid's stories "going nowhere" would apply more strongly to Johns. And Johns has become way too decompressed and event-obsessed as a writer. There's long-term planning and there's meandering or simply running in place. He also seems to be approaching the burnout point as a writer.

Haha, that's what I was thinking. His work right now on Daredevil and Hulk has been pretty fantastic. Most of his work is fantastic really, outside a couple of blotches here and there. Not sure how I'd rate him in relation to Johns personally. I was never the biggest fan of Johns. I liked his work, but I remember when he was sort of the golden boy of the internet crowd (I don't know how many times I saw some thread about wanting Geoff Johns to write a character's, any character's, ongoing series). But I also thought he was a pretty solid writer and still do. The relaunch of JL was rough as hell, but it's beginning to smooth out a good deal.

Agreed Jake Fury I also enjoyed the prelude. Hopefully it'll be as good in issues 16 of JL and Aquaman and issue 17 of JL.

I think they were both great starts to this story. Aquaman has been a favorite since its beginning and love the conflict Arthur has concerning Atlantis.
