Surprised no one just went with The Red and the Black.

Joker, through his use of frequent allusions, has really shown himself to be fairly knowledgeable of film, theatre, and literature. He's done Pagliacci in comics and TV, he's made Hamlet allusions, Hot Time in the Old Town in the '89 movie, Life is Like a Mountain Railroad in Last Laugh. I find that sort of funny. Between gutting people and torturing children he must sit a lot with a good book or those nights where he just stays in and Frank Capras it all evening. Lotsa bluegrass and ragtime on the madman's ipod.

Also, I really didn't need "redheaded women buck like goats" and the Joker conflated in my head. That's leaving scars, thank you.

    It wouldn't. I think he'd hate it.

I'd offer up the Insane Clown Posse but would that be redundant?

Despite the genius level intellect they sometimes give him, I have a hard time picturing Joker sitting still and reading.

He could always do audio books.

Do we really need to make every Batman villain related to "Alice In Wonderland"?

He'd likely be a big fan of Lovecraft. The vision of an insane, chaotic and hostile universe is perfectly in line with the Joker's philosophy.

I definitely cosign Maldoror, but I imagine he would quit fond of the Marquis de Sade.

That's what I was going to say. The cosmic indifference that is the theme of lovecraft's work is basically the cruel joke of life that certain versions adhere too.

Of course with other versions it's a different story.

Or on a more basic level, a pop-up book that when opened releases a boxing glove. Not to read himself, but as a gift.
