A lot of Vertigo books would be right up your alley. 100 Bullets, Spaceman and Scalped, in particular I'd imagine. Preacher is great, too. The Maxx by Sam Keith is brutal and psychedelic and emotional all at the same time. Sandman Mystery Theater is awesome, and mostly collected. If you don't mind a more 'comic' comic (in writing and art), Chew is really good and has that twisted mentality you might be looking for. Brian Michael Bendis' Daredevil run is gritty and epic. If you enjoy that, you can just keep going with Ed Brubaker's Daredevil run which immediately follows it. If you're into manga or Japanese-style comics/cartoons, check out Lone Wolf and Cub, which is as exciting and bloodsplattered as it is engrossing.

I also concur with Sin City and From Hell.

If you liked The Killing Joke it might be worth checking out Azzarello/Bejermo's Joker graphic novel and Brubaker/Manke's The Man Who Laughs. From Hell is fantastic, engrossing, and well worth looking into. Sandman Mystery Theatre is a great read. If you're alright with Batman, some of the LTDK storylines, including Gothic and Faces, might be up your alley. Grendel certainly. Ennis' Punisher stuff too. Fatale and Severed are good, but they skew towards horror.

The Question by Denny O'Neill. Hub City was rotten to its core.
    The first Deadshot limited series.
    Suicide Squad 1987
    Night Walker limited series

You might also check out the original run of Grimjack. The first 30 or so issues are as dark as could be slipped by the censors.

MIDNIGHT NATION by J. Michael Straczynski
    http://www.amazon.com/Michael-Stracz.../dp/1582404607
It is about a man who is killed, in a sense, and is on a journey to save his soul.
Los Angeles police officer Lieutenant David Grey encounters a brutal murder. When he tracks down a possible lead he encounters strange, goblin-like men who attack him. When he awakes, Grey finds himself in a hospital, and those around him have become translucent and can no longer see him. It is explained to him by his mysterious guide Laurel that he has lost his soul and he has now been plunged into a shadow world that runs parallel to our own. Here is where all the abandoned and forgotten people and things go.

    BLOODY MARY by Garth Ennis
    http://www.amazon.com/Bloody-Mary-Ga.../dp/1401207251
Mary led a quiet life as a nun, secluded in her convent, until the war came...and everything changed. She renounced her life of peace...Now "Bloody" Mary is one of the best death-dealing commandos to ever see combat, caught in a future World War. With nothing left to lose, she becomes the ideal weapon; the only one who can take on suicidal missions in fascist Europe and the ruins of a cult-occupied Manhattan

    ALIAS by Brian Michael Bendis
    http://www.amazon.com/Alias-Vol-Bria.../dp/0785111417
Meet Jessica Jones, one-time costumed heroine turned private investigator. After realizing that her powers were unremarkable compared to those of the icons in the Marvel Universe, Jones gave up being a super hero and eventually opened up a detective agency. While her intent to help others is intact, her personal behavior is anything but valiant: She is bitter, resentful and self-destructive. In lieu of professional help, Jessica battles her inferiority complex and depression with a chain-smoking habit and alcoholic tendencies. In spite of her self-imposed exile from the spandex crowd, Jessica's cases continually lead her back to her old circle of acquaintances, which only fuels her angst even more. Jessica is imperfect and human, and her textured personality is eloquently rendered by Bendis and Gaydos.

    CATWOMAN by Darwyn Cooke
    http://www.amazon.com/Catwoman-Vol-1...woman+brubaker
For years, Selina Kyle has prowled the skyline of Gotham City as its most famous thief, Catwoman. But when word spreads of Catwoman's demise, Selina decides to leave the costumed world behind and continue her trade cloaked in the shadows. Unable to enjoy her newfound anonymity for too long though, Selina decides that she must return to her infamous persona. Donning a new costume and attitude, Catwoman returns to the streets and sets her sights on the serial killer that has been preying upon the streetwalkers she calls friends.
