... of cover versions of songs, and to put some of your favorites, some obscure gems, and maybe something really unexpected. An average 80 minute CD-R can hold let's say 16-20 songs, what do you put on it? If someone were to ask this of me, this is what they would get in return:

Ring of Fire ~ Social Distortion
Aint That A Shame ~ Cheap Trick
Knockin' On Heaven's Door ~ Guns 'n' Roses
War Pigs ~ Faith No More
I'm Your Boogie Man ~ Rob Zombie

You Really Got Me ~ Van Halen
Get It On (Bang A Gong) ~ Power Station
Stop Your Sobbing ~ The Pretenders
Smooth Criminal ~ Alien Ant Farm
Hard To Handle ~ The Black Crowes
Heard It Through The Grapevine ~ CCR
    Tainted Love ~ Marilyn Manson
    Hurt ~ Johnny Cash
Crimson and Clover ~ Joan Jett & The Blackhearts

I would tell said friend to stop being such a lousy cheap-ass, and I'd send him an e-mail with links to songs on youtube, and inform him he can easily buy all the songs on mp3 on iTunes, amazon.com, etc....

That said, this would be the list of 31 cover songs for him to peruse (I live in a fictional world where CD-Rs can absorb 31 songs, not 16-20), in no particular order:

The Flaming Lips feat. Amanda Palmer "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" (Peggy Seeger)
    Johnny Cash "Hurt" (NIN)
Depeche Mode "Route 66" (The King Cole Trio)
Sinead O'Connor "Nothing Compares 2U" (Prince)
The Echoing Green "Here is the House" (Depeche Mode)
    Erasure "SOS" (Abba)
Eurythmics "Winter Wonderland" (Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians????)
    Iris "The Picture" (Hubert KaH)
Sneaker Pimps "The Chauffeur" (Duran Duran)
Fgfc820 Feat. Rexx Arkana "The Hanging Garden" (The Cure)
The Killers "Ultra Violet (Light My Way)" (U2)
Lana Del Rey "Blue Velvet" (The Clovers)
Marina and the Diamonds "Perfect Stranger" (Magnetic Man feat. Katy B)
Pet Shop Boys "Always On My Mind" (Brenda Lee)
The Righteous Brothers "Unchained Melody" (Todd Duncan)
Richard X feat. Kelis "Finest Dreams" (The SOS Band "The Finest")
This Mortal Coil "Song to the Siren" (Tim Buckley)
Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine "This is How it Feels" (Inspiral Carpets)
Marilyn Manson "Personal Jesus" (Depeche Mode)
Urge Overkill "Girl, You'll be a Woman Soon" (Neil Diamond)
Rythmus "Balanced" (Depeche Mode "Get the Balance Right")
Skeleton Hands "Same Old Madness" (Ministry)
Skeleton Hands "Something in the Way" (Nirvana)

Karen O with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross "Immigrant Song" (Led Zeppelin)

Brave New World "Shake the Disease" (Depeche Mode)

    Kinda harsh man. LOL!

Although actually I don't think I ever made mix CDs (well, mixTAPES really, because I am old) for friends. I did make them for girls I wanted to impress though, quite a few times. Didn't work out so much!

Really? I'm sure it's not you, so must be the music you selected.
Although, looking at your selections that doesn't make much sense, either.
I mean, who wouldn't fall for such a romantic song like... Godzilla.
