Default Showrunner Mazzara Announces Departure from AMC's "The Walking Dead"

In a move reminiscent of the 2011 departure of Frank Darabont, showrunner Glen Mazzara has announced he is leaving "The Walking Dead." Both he and AMC cite differences over post-Season 3 plans for the series.

Ohhh boy this one could be a big blow... because its been credited to Mazzara that since he came on the show midway through the 2nd season that things started really picking up and moving as a series.

Yes, I agree. Looks like we are in for another "search for Sofia for an ENTIRE season so we can milk this gravy train" season next year. But season 5 should be awesome again.

Also, I'm very happy for Glen to move on and work on another show with all he learned on TWD.
    Grr. Argh.

The writers don't write in a vacuum. The producers/showrunner work with the writers and directors to set the tone, major events, etc. I always thought the second season was hampered by budget issues and that contributed to some of the wheel spinning. Still, I hope someone gets in there who can keep it going because this season has been darn good.

Convince yourself they're cheering for you. You do that, and some day, they will. And that's how Sue Cs it."- Sue Sylvester, "Glee"

It wasn't just the budget though - if it was the budget.

Narrative Shane had overstayed his welcome by about 2 to 3 episodes I think.

I felt like his death was actually when the show picked up speed - as if writers and everyone finally said: 'Enough of this clown. I'm sick of him.'

I felt like Shane and Rick had so many rinse-lather-repeat moments.

If the idea was that Shane just 'never going to get it' then fine, but if that was the case then the writing should have done a better job of showing a mounting frustration with Rick towards Shane.

Really though, I think they should have just killed him sooner.

Much as I was sad to see Dale go, I think killing him and Shane (effectively Rick's Angel/Devil conscience) has been great for shifting the struggle to an internal one within Rick, which for me is way more interesting.

I was so bummed at the announcement that Frank Darabont was leaving the show, but as much as I hate to admit it, the show improved massively without him, and under Mazzara's helm.

I hope that Mazzara's departure doesn't see a slide in the quality of the last season.

My friends and I were discussing last week just how great it is that the zombies have simply become window-dressing for ideas and expression about us as people, and what constitutes a society, morality etc.

I hope this show doesn't start slip-slidin' down the quality ladder as a result of this. I remember his being asked if there will be more zombies in Season 2 (they were roughly halfway through) on Talking Dead and he emphatically stated "It's going to be zombie-licious!" I think it was the episode with Dave Navarro, who was complaining about the lack of zombie action.
