Right. He was born in the US, but raised in France. During the making of "Greystoke" and later "Highlander", he was speaking phonetically for the most part. And he was trying to have an accent that was an European mix as well. Not an easy thing to do. By the time he did the second film, he had a much easier time and you can hear it in his accent and the way his performance was.
The first DVD that was put out did have a bad transfer. The Immortal Edition DVD and Blu-Ray both have a much better transfer and sound mix. Either version will suffice. The DVD Immortal Edition with Lambert on the front holding the katana, has a good transfer and contains a bonus CD of three songs from Queen, as well as the music videos on disc one. It doesn't matter if you get the one with the tin slip case or not. The Blu-Ray from Lionsgate has a good transfer taken from the original source, thus some of the audio in the film is from the original track. The DVD version used the 1996 audio mix, which included sound effects from the series and a few ADR voice overs were removed. Also, would you know which version of the first film is best to get? I read online reviews that the original DVD was a poor quality transfer, the blu ray is an improvement, but it seems like the best version is the Immortal Edition (blu ray)?
