I'm pretty sure that the writer isn't dork enough to think that any Avenger is "in the hero business for money".

With both Wolverine and Spidey, it seems the idea is that Cap and Iron Man consider people like them (the veteran Avengers, basically) to be the easy sells, and so a token compensation - like beer or a stipend - is just used as a formality to confirm their interest.

Actually, when Spidey first tried joining the FF he was asking for a pay check. So it's not ENTIRELY out of character for him to want some compensation... really what's out of the norm here is the fact that he's actually geting it. Usually Peter doesn't get paid and ends up doing it for free, even though historically he's one of he heroes that in the past actually needed the pay check.

And that's why they got rid of Victoria Hand, who used to insist on an identity before handing over checks.
Visited NY and DC and saw Spider-Man Turn off the Dark.

I've never been an Avengers fan, but man, I am loving this book so far. I have been an X-Fan my entire life, and it's probably heresy to say this, but I would honestly rather read anything by Hickman rather than anything by Bendis. Hickman's style is just soooo good...arghh, can't wait for the next issue to come out!

Can someone explain when Tony Stark got an arc reactor in his chest? I just realized it was drawn on his chest in Avengers #1, but last time I checked he had gotten surgery years ago that removed the shrapnel. Thank you.

Well, it looks like congrats are in order for Mr. Hickman, Mr. Opena and the rest of the crew. Avengers #1 and #2 were the 2nd and 3rd highest selling books in December, behind Amazing Spider-Man 700.
