Default Should Looper DVD Release Be Delayed Due To School Shooting Tragedy?

It looks like Looper is due to be released on DVD on December 31st.

I'm not going to give away plot lines for those who haven't seen it, but the plot does involve a pretty shocking/horrific agenda Bruce Willis' character thinks will resolve his situation. Let's say there is a parallel with what we know so far of the Sandy Hook CT school massacre.

Granted, it's not something you'd know about if you saw any of the marketing for Looper...but it is solidly part of the move, and when I watched it I was pretty disturbed.

So...for those who have seen it, do you think the movie studio should delay it's release a few months or so? Or will they release it as normal, ignoring the plot point in the marketing?

It's a DVD release of a movie that came out months before these shootings ever happened. Obviously you should be considerate in the wake of an event such as this, but at the same time some common sense should be practiced. Releasing a movie like Looper on DVD in the wake of this shouldn't offend anyone.

What I wouldn´t give to be a fly on the wall at an AMC writers meeting discussing who´s the next little girl they´re gonna kill off.

No. The parallels are extremely flimsy. If a viewer is going to get offended by entertainment, they should censor themselves. Maybe not see anything besides PG films for a while until they can once again control their outrage and emotions.

    Let's not, because there isn't.

If it was a theatrical release, then I could understand delaying it, but only for business/marketing reasons. I really don't go for the emotional crap. I also don't think other people's lives should be changed just for the sake of victims (or their relatives). I would have been just as likely to see a movie where the Trade Centers were brought down before or after 9/11. I would have seen a disaster movie just after Katrina (no problem-- heck, it might have even been more fun for me). But I can certainly understand other people not being ready for it, especially those directly affected.

But this is a movie that's already been released and just coming on video. Anyone who has a problem should just simply not buy it until they are ready for it, while leaving those who are ready for it to their freedom to watch it.

unless, of course, the marketers think it will sell better if some space is there. Then... by all means! Delay away!

Most things that offend people shouldn't, but they do nonetheless. And if you're a studio exec, you have to make the judgement based on what you think is most likely to happen not what you think should happen.

Yep. Thus why I included the "shouldn't" in my statement, because people are too touchy these days.
