I'm quite willing to help minimize the murder and manslaughter rate. I just don't see how taking guns from responsible, law abiding gun owners is going to solve anything. The problem is with people who break the law, not with people who follow it.
You skipped right past the post where I quoted the FBI's definition of assault as used in the Standard Crime Reports, didn't you?

he would have had to present a permit....gun shows don't do background checks, but they can't sell to anyone without a permit

That would depend on where he went to the gun show.

Sadly, this is true. What is also sadly true is the ACLU defends these Amendments as individual rights BUT the 2nd (they believe it is a "collective right").

Many states don't have the "permit requirement" and many that do have the "private sale" loophole. I wouldn't disagree with a VERY quick universal background check hosted by the FBI/ATF and paid for by taxing the sale. This still wouldn't affect "private sales", though. Those are tough to regulate.

They don't defend the second because it's never been threatened, except in the minds of insane people

Because many guns are sold at gun shows. And I know the other arguments are "ban gun shows" or "ban sales at gun shows".

Can you name an instance how the 2nd Amendment could be threatened, then?
