I'd argue that you just don't understand Superman. The stories are about how he isn't a God and Lex wishes he were.

I personally love Superman and hate Earth One. Go figure.

Earth One was my first Superman book. Its okay, and volume 2 is great

I highly recommend it, even though the first volume is just okay.

It might be a good read ... But before I say 'yes' or 'no' to you, I gotta know what do you like? It's all a 'maybe' until we know your tastes.

I think you would like the Man of Steel limited from 1986, then.

I'd recommned you go instead to Amazon and read the reviews there. The reviewers there are just readers who read the book looking to be entertained with no agenda. You'd get there feedbacks from a more honest representation of the comic book reading community. Comics message boards are usually populated by long time readers who read tons of comics yet somehow entertainment or appreciation escapes them.

This is a fantastic series: is it available in TP or do I have to locate the issues the hard way?

Yes. It's pretty much the anti JesusMan interpretation of Superman... It's very Controversial, but if what you don't like about Superman is his All Powerful God reputation this might turn you. Birthright too.
...And does Mr. Goddanm Batman says so much as ''Thanks''? OF COURSE not. That'd hardly be GRIM AND GRITTY, would it?

I must confess, that Birthright was one hell of a letdown for me. At best it was luckwarm, with crappy art. Stick with the classics, maybe Byrne's Man of Steel, since it introduced the post-crisis Superman or you just pick up the current adventures, given that it is a new continuity again.

Supreme Power/Squadron Supreme was a or rather two Marvel series also written by JMS. It was the Ultimate Marvel version of Squadron Supreme, which is their take on the Justice League.
In Supreme Power, an rocket carrying a baby is found by farmers, but a few hours later the U.S.Military knocks on their door. The superpowered baby gets raised to be America's ultimate weapon, codenamed Hyperion, the powersource of the rocket, a crystal reacting to thoughts merges with a sniper nicknamed the Doctor and years later the scientists realise that the rocket released a nano-virus capable of augmenting the human DNA, which becomes evident as more and more mutants and meta-beings appear globally. Of course things get pearshaped very fast as Hyperion realises how much he has been manipulated, while at the same time Redstone, the worlds first superpowered serialkiller makes his debut. Unfortunatly Marvel did cancel the series in mid-story. There was a follow-up series by Chaykin, which was really bad and featured Ultimate Nick Fury, but JMS stuff was really great.
