Chitauri in The Avengers

After 4 hits and one mediocre performer (Hulk) of course they wouldn't have stopped even if Avengers had flopped.

You only stop if your first film flops, not your sixth.

On the Chitauri: Having soldiers whose life is maintained by a space ship is a very cruel and Thanosy thing to do. For me, it provides some early characterisation for Thanos.
On the tesseract: The tesseract has only shown the ability to teleport things in and teleport things away, not teleport itself.
On the helicarrier: The thing was already damaged. If it had arrived at the NY battle and had a space whale fly through it, it would be a very bad day for NY.

Did it nearly crash, I forget if that's something that was shown...I don't think it was, but maybe I'm just forgetting? Sure it had like one of it's turbofans or whatever you would call it almost blown out, but I don't remember seeing it going down. How does something barely fly that is flying? I get it as an expression, but the Helicarrier was flying, it doesn't make any sense that it couldn't move if it's staying in the air. I just figured they didn't move in because they wanted to stay out of it, although it was pretty stupid we didn't see S.H.I.E.L.D. guys helping on the ground (and in the air) in the battle...you know, other than Hawkeye and Black Widow.

It was shown pretty clearly to be heavily damaged. One engine was gutted, the bridge got blown up by Hawkeye and they had to work double time just to get the communications back up.

So yeah, they were a non-factor. They were limping along
