Americans in general are crazier than folks elsewhere. It's just true. Our media is just a non-stop stream of alarms and scandals, so much so that you wouldn't imagine that most of us live rather comfortably and our problems aren't all that serious. We are too eager to demonize our neighbors.

Worse: our popular culture is full of "lone gunmen" and alienated killers as heroes.

Can you admit that, in a place in your heart you don't like to talk about, you secretly envied this fellow? That you admired the Columbine killers? They actually lived the American dream. They struck back at the Man and the System, and went out in a blaze of glory, and got famous too. They made themselves the heroes of their own movie. They made themselves just like the armed and dangerous heroes of our more questionable entertainments. There's a dry rot in the core of the American psyche, and this is a sign that it's there.

I take a lot of heat here, because I don't like the darkness and gore and the sorts of popular entertainment that feed these demons. But we need to stand up against the content of our culture, and too often we fail to do so.
Superhero comic books only become art to the extent that their banal, unrealistic fantasy and garish styles go too far and become interesting. Attempts to ground them in reality can only ruin them.

Just when I though it couldn't get any fucking stupider.

Edited to add... I do not secretly envy this fellow, but I might secretly want you to fall down.

I believe a kid brought a molotov cocktail to my school, and put it under the bleachers. At least, that's what I remember hearing. He was expelled, and the administration didn't have much to say about it.

Obama was in tears during his statement.

We struggled against apartheid in South Africa, supported by people the world over, because black people were being blamed and made to suffer for something we could do nothing about; our very skins. It is the same with sexual orientation. It is a given.

They would probably end up like the shoe bomber, or the underwear bomber.

Other countries have rational gun laws, you don't hear about somebody throwing a bomb into a school every other week in Australia, do you?

Not surprising, given that he's a father. Malia and Sasha probably got some unexpected hugs.
