Enjoyed the issue. It wasn't as good as issue #3, but still better than #1 and #2. Tony knew he had to kill those women, but it was something he didn't enjoy doing. When he turns the HUD off so he can't see it is pretty well written. On to issue #5. I'm really looking forward to the Godkiller arc.

It's extremely versatile and certainly raises some complicated ethical issues, but it's not terribly mysterious. And imbuing it with some sort of independent agency, if that's what you're suggesting, seem like a stretch.
Well that's more than I understood it to be. Is this what happened to both Stark and the first host, because I didn't see any scientist playing around with their programmed instructions? The first hosts instructions was in the wind, and Stark was so broken, Hansen had little time to hone Extremis specifically for him. Maybe that's the case in this series, but I do wonder if Extremis has it's own way of doing things.

    Re-read Extremis, then.

From Iron Man v4 #3, Maya explains Extremis:

From Iron Man v4 #4, Maya programs a dose of Extremis to repair Tony:

From Iron Man v4 #5, Tony reveals that he made some of his own changes to the Extremis programming:

Thanks for those pages. Yes, I see that Extremis was precisely programmed for Stark, and that they had enough time for Stark to even tweak that, which makes him a genius. But it also means that the first host was known to them intimately, for them to make a dose that didn't kill him. I thought Extremis was far less sensitive than it was depicted, which makes Extremis a very delicate tool, and not something that can be applied haphazardly. I thought you could just inject it into anybody because it was so biologically friendly, but that was my misconception.

I'm enjoying this book and I reallly like that it is a series of done-in-ones with a larger backstory.

The way I read it, the nutjob scientist/doctor actually did manage to summon something. It was just that normal women kept dying under possession so the guy used Extremis to pump them up to something that could handle possession.

But Tony doesn't believe in the occult (a weird attitude to have considering he hangs out with a God), so he is gonna characterize this stuff as "delusions" and "programming". Maybe he considers Thor just a jumped up alien and Doc Strange a mutant with a great act. But that is kind of what this arc is about.

Tony's been harangued by Odin and stared the Phoenix in the face. He has empirical proof of this stuff existing but he won't/can't accept it.

The one thing I'm noticing about all these stories is that Tony hasn't learned anything yet.

The Knights and the Drug Lord used Extremis for ends that were argueable altrusitic. The Doctor we get this issue is the
first utterly evil nutjob we have gotten in this story. Both Hansen and Stark feared misuse of thier inventions. Extrimis could do a lot of good (last issue it cured a fatal disease) but Maya Hansen was just sitting on the stuff. Does the inventor's intent trump the needs of the world? It's an issue because Hansen willingly gave the stuff to terrorists for funding. Hansen was no better than the guys that Iron Man is fighting now. Has any of this even occured to Tony yet?

Other than his monologue in issue #1, I don't get a sense that Tony Stark is coming to a realization about anything.

As far as the art goes, I never had the deep revulsion to Land that other posters seem to.

His women all look alike? So do Mike Grell's. So what is the ache?
Quoted because you summed up my feelings perfectly about this series. IMO, this new IRON MAN series is a hell of a lot better than Fraction's boring as hell talking heads run.

    I'm really enjoying this series!

I was a little hesitant upon reading issue #1. I was coming at it though from the POV of someone who's never been an Iron Man fan. It was okay, but nothing special.

Each progressive issue has been consistently more impressive. I know nothing about 'Extremis', but felt there was enough exposition in the books that I'm able to grasp it's effects and signifigance (but thanks for posting those scans. That's kinda cool).

I'm not able to measure this against any past runs, so I'm probably a little more open minded than 'fans'...but this seems to me the perfect execution of the Marvel NOW mission. It's entertaining, progressing old stories while being completely accessable to new readers.

I wonder what the climax is going to be? Tony is supposed to have been purged of the Extremis but I wonder if the point of the arc is to re-ignite Extremis again, to make him ready for space rigors?

The tone and the art is good but a little too "Armor Wars" for me.

Lets see how this next stand alone fairs......
