Default Do you prefer Batman as a person or a mantle?

Which do you perfer? An identity created by Bruce or a costume to be pass down to one man to another? Do you want Batman to be immortalized or be worn by only Bruce?

One problem I have with the costume being passed down to different guys is that some guy 1000 years from now could use the Batman persona for evil purposes like revenge or to commit murders. That would hurt the Batman legacy. Bruce can't be sure the future Batmen would be all good guys.

Honestly, this is one of the things which really depends on the story and the writer.

There is certainly a lot of merit in the idea that Bruce Wayne IS Batman in a way that goes beyond it being a mere costumed guise. Batman is embedded deep in Bruce's psyche, and is sustained by Bruce Wayne alone, even as he in turn sustains Bruce Wayne. There was this really great story called 'Ego' which theorized that the 'Batman' identity was created in Bruce's mind immediately after the murders...the bat flying in through the window merely gave it form.
Other characters in-universe certainly support the notion. Dick never considered himself Batman...he believed he was merely playing a part. Even with Batman Inc, and the numerous 'Batmen' all over the globe, there is the idea that, all said and done, there can only ever be ONE Batman, no matter how many guys wear the mask.

But Chris Nolan in particular has really sold me, and a lot of others, on the idea of Batman as a symbol, which has also been played with in the comics and other media. Batman has come to stand for more than Bruce Wayne personal crusade against crime...he has a mythic presence in Gotham and has truly shaped the city's destiny for better or for worse. Ultimately, its the IDEA of Batman that terrorizes criminals...not the man behind the mask, no matter how skilled he may be. And the Nolan films showed us how Batman can be an inspiration to others to act.

So really, there is no clear answer to this question.
