I've only read Red Sonja: Blue, which ties in to next year's Red Sonja: Unchained. I think it stood alone fairly well, so maybe that's a good place to at least see if you like Sonja (though it is, arguably, a deconstruction and a critique of her armour).
Pulling: Whispers, 2000AD, Red Sonja: Unchained, Amala's Blade, Princeless
I use to like the Marvel Comics version.

wow Major Hoy!!!!!
I was just going to make this same suggestion; but I wouldn't've been bright enough to post the covers!
Yes, yes, yes, Kaarenisen! Start here: with the Roy Thomas/Clare Noto/Frank Thorne Marvel comics. Fantastic fantasy! Strong, [I]Intelligent Characters (even Conan, when he appears has a certain intelligence to him!)! Innnnncredibly Beautiful Artwork!
Less ravingly, I'd suggest starting with the second series (as pictured above, not the Marvel Feature series) and then going back for the Marvel Feature series. John Buscema did many of the Marvel Features, and I much prefer Frank Thorne's artwork with its detail and wonderful flair for magical appearances.
