Default The Lone Ranger 2013 Movie thread .

They just released the latest trailer for the new Lone Ranger film. I know some teaser images and more had us wary of it. But the film actually....looks very cool from the trailer.

It doesn't look too bad. Better than I thought it would, actually. But they need to keep the humor to a minimum.

I saw a trailer for this yesterday; looks good in a Pirates of the Old West kind of way.

Keep the humor to a minimum... no... but keep the wacky bits like "There is something very wrong with that horse"... yes. One or two moments like that is ok. Breaks the tension. Too many of those moments makes it into a comedy/parody. This could be a new franchise if handled properly.

Couldn't agree more... too many moments like that and all we get is Dark Shadows and that helps nobody.

Guys, it just hit me that there is a Easter egg hint at Lone Ranger in Pirates of the Caribbean 3 (if memory serves me right I think it was 3) that stares us all in the face. Jack, Barbossa and I think Will are all strutting toward Davy Jones in a Cowboy stand off style and there is Western guitar music playing for a few seconds.

I am not trolling here, so forgive the criticism. But I am just really disappointed that the movie is taking a comedy stance. I used to watch Lone Ranger reruns when I was a kid, had the action figures and everything. It was never played for laughs. And watching the new trailer, everything looked great in the film... except the scenes with Lone Ranger and/or Tonto! It's screaming Seth Rogen's Green Hornet to me, which makes me sad.

I am ambivalent about this film. I have my hopes that it will do for the westerns what POTC did for Pirate films. I see the humor in it not so much as a comic send-up as just character driven humorous moments. But it might also skew to far towards a joke instead of just humor in a serious movie. I won't know until I see it all in context. I personally don't get a Green Hornet disaster style vibe from the trailers. In that I mean that it doesn't seem as if the Lone Ranger is an idiot being trained by Tonto. They feel a bit more like partners.

Lone Ranger getting shot with the Arrow, pausing, then screaming OWWWW just felt like the gas gun all over again to me. Honestly, what I got from this was Shanghai Noon with Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson. But I knew that was played for laughs. This isn't supposed to be, that's all. Just look at Depp's track record with classic properties: Willy Wonka, Alice in Wonderland, Dark Shadows... all twisted versions of their original concepts. And especially with Dark Shadows, it was done as a spoof. And while there is some great action in that trailer, every scene I saw with Depp was played for mockery.

But to each their own. :)

Even though Pirates of the Caribbean didn't start a trend of pirates/high seas action and adventure movies, it was a nice change from the norm. I actually think that the western genre is a lot more viable than pirates/swashbuckling movies, so I hope that the Lone Ranger is the big budget western to usher in a new dawn of western.

I'm really looking forward to it, personally.
