A phone call is personal; an email is impersonal. You have to interact with a person when you talk to them on the phone. You may have to answer difficult questions. Consequently, it can also be uncomfortable. You're exposing yourself to their emotions. You can't be exactly sure how they'll react, but you know it won't be pleasant. Still, common human decency and respect requires you to do it anyway. Firing someone by email is what a coward does. "I don't want to go through the nasty experience of having to talk to them, so I'll just deliver the bomb and be gone."
I don't know what kind of editor this guy is, but this sort of behavior tells me what kind of human being he is.
