Batman fights death, and Superman fights the impossible - Grant Morrison
For a serialized character, maintaining modern-day relevance is important, yes. However, there's a value to timelessness too.
It's funny that you mention Dickens, because this time of year proves just how timeless one of his works ("A Christmas Carol") is. While the full body of Dickens' work is indeed known to few outside of those who study literature, "A Christmas Carol" remains commonly known. And I think that points to the value of timelessness - Of something becoming a cultural touchpoint stretching across multiple generations.
The Superman character and costume is another such cultural touchpoint. And I think it's important to be careful with a character like that, so you don't lose what made him so popular and timeless in the first place.
Finally, "coolness" is subjective. The classic Superman costume looks plenty cool to me (and apparently plenty of people agree, given how successful Superman has been in merchandise). But what they've done with Superman's costume for MoS? That doesn't strike me as cool at all. Lexrules is right - It would be so much better if it was smoother and sleeker. People tend to associate "cool" with smooth and sleek apparel. So why give Superman something that looks like chain-mail? It really makes that poster image look so much worse, imo.
And I'm being completely honest here. The MoS suit doesn't make me think "cool" to the extent that the classic costume does. In fact, it almost makes me think "drab"... and that's a damn shame for the costume for a character called "Superman". Drab is the absolute last thing his costume should be.
What makes a story timeless, in my opinion, is its ability to be adapted in a myriad of ways that still manage to evoke similar themes and ideas.
Dickens's A Christmas Carol has remained a cultural touchstone in part because it is a story that has been retold in its original form but also because it has been re-imagined in countless creative adaptations. It's a Wonderful Life, Scrooged, Doctor Who Christmas Specials, Smallville episodes like "Homecoming" have all repackaged the Dickens classic with general positive results. These varied permutations don't follow the exact same blueprint or hit all of the same notes as the original, but they are testaments to how enduring narratives accommodate change, innovation, and modernization as long as the core message remains the same. In this case, visiting the past, present, and future leads a central character to change a flawed part of themselves. It's funny that you mention Dickens, because this time of year proves just how timeless one of his works ("A Christmas Carol") is. What has made Superman popular over the past 75 years hasn't remained static. I believe Superman remains popular and timeless because the character has evolved over time to match the needs and interests of each successive generation. As long as he remains a powerful hero who fights for truth and justice without a mask, who sees humans as equals and loves both abstractly and on an individual level, then he's Superman. The Superman character and costume is another such cultural touchpoint.
