Question What would happen if Bruce Wayne went broke?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9eL7izdnQ0 MadTV skit

As we all know, Waynecorp funds Batman and all his gadgets. What would happen if Bruce Wayne went broke? His obsession wouldn't let him stop fighting crime. Do you think this is an accurate portrayal?

He'd live in a garage with a fat mechanic named Al and drive an old black Linoln with a bus engine shoved in it.

Someone link to that emotionally-unstable, sleeping rough on the street Batman who goes around cutting people's mouths off and then crying.

Not that I think that'd happen with the real Batman, who'd be less into disposable batarangs and secret rocketships and stuff. Also, he'd just steal Luthor's fortune.

I suspect that cool stories would happen.

The whole "billionaire playboy" aspect of Batman hasn't been interesting in like forever. He might need a new source of gadgets if he went broke--but then again I think Batman is tough enough that he doesn't really need his gadgets.

I'd love it if he lost his fortune and his company, was forced to abandon his Bruce Wayne identity, and finally had to get a job. He could move to downtown Gotham (with all the people he's been beating up all these years), maybe get a job as a cop or even a private detective, and still go out at night as Batman. I would love to read that story.

If Bruce didn't have access to money...

Like during Murderer/Fugitive? Or like in RIP?

I've always been interested in the idea of a "rags-to-riches" type (parallel-Earth) Batman series.

What if Bruce Wayne was poor? What if the Wayne name meant nothing to Gotham and BW had to work for everything? How might that speak to the sociological value of his crusade?

My friend argues that what makes Batman so badass is that Bruce is a rich kid who chooses his fate. Which is, of course, the right answer. But is there not a good story to be told in the David Copperfield archetype?

The problem with this premise is it'd require him to be stupid in order to be poor. Right?

The money is a non-issue. It's simply an excuse to justify how he can have all his toys.

Think about it; if you had virtually unlimited wealth and wanted to use it to fight crime, would Plan A be 'put on spandex and punch people'?

Not necessarily. He can't be everywhere. Say someone distracts him, takes him out of commission or whatever. Then someone hacks into his company and bank accounts.. It can be done without Bruce lke an idiot but it's alot of work for a story that wouldn't be permanent.
