A flawed, multi dimensional character with a story and past that's interesting, his believability grounds an unrealistic story and the possibilities of an irresponsible child becoming Superman is interesting and intriguing. His character remains likable because we're shown enough of his good deeds to like him whilst still leaving room for growth. It's entertaining to see him grow as a character as the story progresses. His brattyness can at times be entertaining and it's always understandable.

Old Billy was just a one dimensional stereotype that remained moderately entertaining at times but was mostly annoying.

But back on topic, I'd say SHAZAM isn't that suitable for children (it isn't unsuitable but not really targeted towards them). BQM's Batgirl is a good choice but avoid Simone's and Fawkes' garbage as it isn't suitable for anyone. Tiny Titans and Superman Family Adventures are also good choices. Lil' Gotham is amazeballs. Definately get that when it hits trades.

Alas, we'll have to disagree on a sizable amount of that. Ordway's Power of Shazam series was fantastic. And I never found any prior version of Billy annoying, neither as a kid or now as an adult. (I did find the attempt to make Billy the new wizard and Freddy the new Cap just... a bad idea overall, but Billy still wasn't annoying.)

I'll also disagree that Simone is bad--I think she's one of DC's best current writers (at least, that are left), and I eagerly look forward to her Movement series. None of her stuff is kid-suitable, I think. I don't know how the current Shazam backups are in terms of suitability, but since they're in the back of the current Justice League, that kind of puts them in bad territory.

There was a Magic of Shazam series that was indeed kid-friendly, and had a fair amount of Mary in it, so that may fit the bill for the original poster's needs in trade paperback or back issues.

I think the reason why the new SHAZAM! works for me is that I just didn't care that much for Billy as a character to begin with. Johns has created the anti Billy Batson and I think he's a more interesting character.

I usually like Simone but I hated Batgirl. It seemed like the worst way to bring back Babsgirl. Either make her young and energetic without any history, or old and experienced and damaged. Instead she's young, inexperienced, damaged, gets her ass kicked and whines all the time. The worst of both worlds.

They're being released in their own trade.

That also seems like a good choice. Wasn't there also comics based on DCAU shows. The JLU one would also be a good choice.

That would definitely work, and since they lead up to the current Batman Beyond series, which is having a new Batgirl coming up...

    Let's see...

Yen Press is rereleasing Sailor Moon, and Dark Horse has rereleased Cardcaptor Sakura and Magic Knight Rayearth. There's also the webcomics Gunnerkrigg Court, Bad Machinery, and Cucumber Quest. Plus the Avatar: The Last Airbender comics by Gene Luen Yang and Gurihiru. I also noticed today that Archie's putting out Tania del Rio's version of Sabrina the Teenage Witch in paperback. And I'll definitely second the recommendation for Yotsuba&!
