Hulk most likely got possessed, seen by the way his eyes opened after Abyss spoke to him. He wasn't in control.
And Cap plummeted into our atmosphere, fell through the sky, and bounced off the side of a building. Three days isn't that bad.

I know Kevin Nichols through a guy that knows a gal. Small world!
If nihilism didn't take some delight in destruction one might suspect nihilists were an unnaturally morbid sort.

My point was, if Cap had used his head and just ran off so he could come back with others, instead of doing his usual brave but silly stance of fighting alone against far more powerful beings he doesn't stand a chance against, he wouldn't ve had to have gotten beaten to a pulp and then sent back in a flaming ship so that he would need 3 days to recover. The character's bravery overcomes any cunning or actual intelligence sometimes...
And it was implied that Hulk was manipulated by Abyss into attacking Thor, not fully possessed. Using the same old insecurity that's been used before. Banner/Hulk hasn't evolved past this by now? It was embarrasing how unprepared they were in the first place for beings powerful enough to throw organic bombs at a planet...
Cap wouldn't know if his friends just would have been killed on the spot. This is the same guy who stood up to Thanos with the Infinity Gauntlet. This is what he does.
The eyes turning a different shade of color, in this case a sort of dark gray, usually implies some kind of mind control. Going after his "old" insecurity is Hulk's main weakness. You may as well ask something to get over their most irrational (or rational) fear. And it was implied that Hulk was manipulated by Abyss into attacking Thor, not fully possessed. Yes, they were unprepared. But two million had already been evo-bombed. I'd say they were under time constraints. You go in, you hit these guys hard, and you go home. Except in this case you don't.

I agree about Cap, this is what he does. Which honestly, after a while, makes the character intellectually limited and overly formulaic. Bravery is one thing, but sometimes being too brave makes one do stupid things. And as for he didn't know whether or not his friends would be killed, you're right. Now it's been 3 days since he got trounced and sent back by foes he should have known he had no hopes of defeating...by all rights they should REALLY be dead by now, or worse.
As for Hulk, see above. Same formula. Do characters evolve? And if Hulk is going to be that easily coerced should he even be counted on? I think Hickman kinda rushed to get this team trounced and relied on old and predictable ways to do it so he could hurry to introduce his new players at the end. Time constraints is one thing, but they coulda been better prepared than THIS. It would have made for a more compelling battle. The New Warriors would have been better prepared than that...
There was enough here to stretch this piece of the story out to two issues without rushing it and thus not only making a very experienced team look like amateurs, but also more details to who the villains are.
It read like a more than positive review to me despite some minor points of criticism, but seeing how much hate Kelly Thompson's opinion is getting you'd think she crapped all over the book.
Having just read it, I'd say it's a good start I guess, I liked it but I wasn't overwhelmed. Better than Uncanny Avengers at least.
It did seem rushed quite a lot in how easily the team got defeated. Decompression is not always a bad thing.
I also think there should have been a lot more details about exactly what the Mars villains did by bombing Earth, just to get a better understanding of what the Avengers are trying to prevent.
And is it just me or did it feel a lot like All-New All-Different X-Men's Krakoa story, here with Cap being sent back to Earth to assemble more Avengers to feed the bad guys?
Damn, this issue was pretty disappointing in my opinion
Artwork and new villains were mediocre, and nothing really exciting happened.
I totally thought it was gonna be awesome, as Jonathan Hickman rarely disappoints. But it was forgettable. Wtf?
Favorites of Marvel Now so far are Uncanny Avengers and All New Xmen. SOOOO GOOD!!!!![]()
Solid number one filled with some cool Avengers moments, and an awesome ending that gave the ish a good emotional kick.
On the other hand, it was a bit compressed and I would have liked to have seen more of Ex Nihlo and his group, especially as they all seem rather interesting and cool (Ex Nihlo himself seems like a very grand, out-there Morrison-esque villain).
And just as a side note, I've never really gotten the adoration for Jerome Opeña's art. It's very pretty at times but I find the random change from a slightly more cartoony style to very realistic (like the panel of Thor swinging the hammer) odd.
On the whole, I enjoyed it and I'm rather sad I can't afford to keep up with it what with the double shipping.
If you think this is over then you're wrong

It only ends once. Anything that happens before that is just progress.
-Jacob (Lost)
This was a great issue. Amazing art. Like the new villains. I like where Hickman is going with this. He gives a good reason (in awesome villains) for the Avengers to get bigger.
Loved the scene with Cap putting on the new costume. Hey, i loved the old costume but I've been hoping for a more updated costume since 1989.
Not a bad 1st issue, but it didn't knock my socks off, as uncanny x-force has. I had to re-read the scenes with the antagonists in them, to get a better understanding what actually was going on in it. The issue probably will read better in Tpb form and I have faith in Hickman it'll all come together as it's only a small part of a bigger story. Another issue I had with the first issue was it seemed like 4 of marvel's biggest got their asses handed to them pretty easily and the only way to overcome their threats is by getting bigger.. Which I guess is what Hickman's been saying all along. "Bigger is a Necessity" Also glad it's a bi-weekly title, seems like there's a lot of meat left on the bone.
Honestly, I just found this incredibly boring. Hell, the first few issues altogether just bored me. The villains are just bland, and this story overall is nothing special. Just average to me.
