I kinda agree with this, but I actually liked the beginning just fine (but I love MK, so that's to be expected).

The art really bugged me in places. The awkward strike-a-pose poses were just bizarre in spots. I'm not talking about the back breaker poses, just some the the standing poses were weirdly wrong and stiff. The facial expressions were almost all the same, especially for poor Valkyrie, who ended up looking like a plastic doll through most of her panels. It made the last half of the issue fall flat for me, especially with the kiss. Someone else mentioned the art lacked a sense of weight, speed and resistance in the action bits, which feels true.

I think Will got told to make sure Val doesn't show too much expression to start with, at least, so I was pretty forgiving of her generally not going about with any sort of tension or anger...and generally, she rarely is emotive in most of her appearances elsewhere, except when the adrenaline's pumping in a fight. She does have a temper. But I get the sense they're planning to send her on an emotional roller coaster over the next few issues, which is most effective if it's established that Val's a pretty unflappable, stoic sort of individual. That's coming right off Fearless, really.

Which is part of what makes those scenes back in SA and Venom where she's flirting with Venom pretty funny, amongst other things.

I did find that second last page awkward, where Val was standing with her knees facing each other, as if she were a little confused. That said...I do like Will's take on her hair. The classic style looks much better than that odd look she had in Fearless.

BTW, did anybody read one of the recent Bunn interviews where he basically lets that Annabelle is the fifth team member?

I'm only dong Dani but even then all credit goes to MurderSheWrote and A2. If someone asked me recommended reading for Misty and Val I wouldn't know, so hopefully someone else can chime in with that.

I just got into a long argument on the TGWTG forums with someone who "Loved the 6th Gun" but is "Never reading Cullen Bunn again because of the lesbian kiss page". She didn't even read Fearless Defenders. And she kept countering with Joss Whedon, when I pointed out he does the same thing.

God, it's tedious.
