Not quite. Yes, it was fan fiction. All of the names were changed and supernatural elements removed. Thus turning it into a more legitimate form of fiction, which then went on to be a top selling book. Hence the desire to adapt it. It's only one step more than what is done with the vast majority of books that are adapted into films.
